Chapter 18 - THE DEVICE IN THE MIRROR

Daniel enlarged the frame until the image broke into squares.
Graham’s face remained indistinct.
The black-stone ring identified him better than his features.
In his right hand was a phone.
Held horizontally.
Camera position.
“He recorded it,” I said.
Victor’s jaw tightened.
“Why?”
Elaine answered.
“Insurance.”
Against Serena.
Against me.
Against anyone.
Graham had lived by leverage.
Men like that rarely trusted partners.
They trusted files.
Investigators now had a reason to seek the device more aggressively, but a warrant required probable cause tied to specific evidence.
The recovered frame helped.
So did Graham’s airport statements.
So did the financial trail.
The process moved.
Not instantly.
But it moved.
Two days later, prosecutors obtained a warrant for Graham’s office devices and cloud backups.
The phone itself was still missing.
His laptop wasn’t.
Forensic technicians found an automatic photo-sync folder.
No full video.
But dozens of still images from the mansion.
Me carrying Ethan.
Victor leaving.
Serena entering rooms.
Documents on Victor’s desk.
The tablet in the nursery.
They had been surveilling patterns inside the house.
One photograph showed something I had never noticed.
The red leather folder.
Open.
Beside it sat Serena’s white purse.
Inside the purse, visible through the opening, was my missing black notebook.
The backup codes.
Victor looked at me.
“That proves she had it.”
“It proves the notebook was in her purse.”
Elaine nodded approvingly.
“Keep saying things exactly that way.”
Evidence did not need exaggeration.
It needed precision.
Then the forensic technician recovered a deleted calendar file.
One entry:
LC transition — Thursday.
Thursday was the day of the foyer attack.
Below it:
GM access window: 11 min.
My initials.
Graham’s.
Eleven minutes.
The exact camera blackout.
I felt a strange calm settle over me.
For days, Serena had reduced my life to accusation and defense.
Now her own planning had a date.
A time.
A duration.
Victor reached for the report.
His hand stopped before touching it.
“Can this be authenticated?”
“Yes,” Elaine said. “But defense counsel will challenge interpretation.”
“What else could it mean?”
“Many things. Our job is not to imagine Serena’s best argument after the fact. It is to prove ours.”
That night, Victor asked me to return to the mansion with Ethan.
Serena’s access had been revoked.
Graham’s credentials were dead.
Additional security had been installed.
I hesitated.
The marble foyer still existed inside my body.
The pain.
The helplessness.
The sound of Ethan screaming.
Victor saw it.
“We can stay somewhere else.”
I looked at the house.
“No.”
Then I stepped inside.
That was my decision.
Not his.
Halfway across the foyer, Daniel called us back.
Investigators had recovered one more deleted file from Graham’s laptop.
A draft message to Serena.

If Lily remembers the nursery, we’re done.
📖 I finally knew why they feared my memory, but understanding exactly what I had seen required me to reconstruct one ordinary afternoon I had nearly forgotten. 👇
