Chapter 10 - Michael Lane

Michael agreed to meet at Gabriella’s office.

My goal was to face the son I had never been allowed to know.

He entered quietly.

Short dark hair.

Edward’s eyes.

My husband’s hands.

I almost stood.

Then stopped.

I had no right to demand emotion from him.

He looked at me.

“You didn’t know?”

“No.”

He believed me.

Not immediately.

But enough to sit down.

Michael had learned he was adopted at twenty-one.

Years later, Peter Sloan contacted him, claiming his birth family had sold him.

Michael investigated.

He found an old ledger after Sloan Family Services closed.

The ledger documented unofficial “placement fees.”

Parents.

Hospitals.

Attorneys.

Administrators.

One name appeared repeatedly.

Carter.

Linda’s maiden name.

Her father, William Carter, had been a hospital administrator at St. Matthew’s.

He signed my twin transfer.

Linda grew up knowing her father had profited from illegal placements.

Peter used that history to recruit her.

He told her family fortunes were built by “paper, not blood.”

That philosophy explained everything she did.

Then Michael showed me the page for my sons.

INFANT A — retained.

INFANT B — Lane placement.

Fee recipient: William Carter.

Frank did not sell Michael.

Linda’s father did.

The money placed briefly into Frank’s account had been an attempt to disguise the payment as parental consent.

Frank returned it.

Then William threatened legal action if he interfered.

Frank spent years trying to recover the child quietly.

That was why Gabriella was named in the trust.

She helped.

Then Michael showed us another page.

One infant transfer from twenty-seven years ago.

Baby girl.

Surname: Carter.

Placement reversed after seventy-two hours.

Biological mother: Linda Carter.

Linda had been seven.

Impossible.

Gabriella spotted the issue.

The date did not refer to Linda as mother.

It referred to her family account.

The actual mother’s name was redacted.

Peter finally supplied the archived file.

The mother was Linda’s older sister, Patricia Carter.

Patricia died young.

The infant was returned to family and raised under another relationship.

Current name: Linda Carter.

Linda had not grown up as William Carter’s biological daughter.

She was his granddaughter.

Her entire identity had been rewritten through the same illegal placement system.

That did not excuse her.

But it explained why she understood identity fraud so instinctively.

She had been raised inside it.

Then Michael showed us one last ledger entry.

When Linda was fifteen, William transferred ownership of a small property into her name using forged parental consent.

Her first fraudulent deed.

Decades before my house.

I thought Peter had taught Linda property fraud as an adult—but the ledger showed her father trained her from childhood.

**Linda had not entered the conspiracy because she married Edward; she had spent her entire life learning that family, property, and identity were things powerful people could rewrite on paper.**

*The evidence from William Carter’s estate revealed the one promise Linda had been trying to fulfill since she was fifteen.*
