Chapter 8 - Gabriella’s Office

Gabriella opened every internal log in her law office voluntarily.

My goal was to determine how Gabriel’s credentials entered the fraud chain.

Her office manager, Renee Walsh, had scanned old county reference files during a digitization project.

Gabriel’s retired access card appeared in one archived client box.

Renee said she never used it.

Security logs showed someone entered the archive room after hours.

Keycard: Gabriella Ruiz.

Gabriella had been at a conference in Boston.

Her keycard had been duplicated.

Who had access to make a copy?

Peter Sloan had visited the office twice.

Linda once.

Mark never.

Then camera footage showed Renee escorting Linda into the conference room.

Renee left.

Linda remained alone for nineteen minutes.

The archive room was directly across the hall.

Linda could have taken the credentials.

But she would still need Gabriel’s old PIN.

Gabriella said only three people knew it.

Gabriel.

Gabriella.

Their mother.

Their mother died twelve years ago.

Gabriel denied involvement.

Then investigators showed him the override log.

He broke.

Not completely.

He admitted giving the PIN to Peter Sloan years earlier during a consulting job.

Peter claimed it was needed to test a county migration system.

Gabriel never reported the breach because he feared losing his pension.

Another small cowardice feeding a larger crime.

Gabriella was furious.

But she did not excuse him.

That mattered to me.

Then Renee confessed she had received $15,000 from Linda.

For copies of my old estate correspondence.

She claimed she never knew about forged deeds.

Again, someone selling “just information.”

The conspiracy survived because everyone drew their own moral line one inch before the worst act.

Then investigators found the missing original trust folder.

Not with Linda.

Not with Peter.

In Renee’s apartment.

She had taken it after Linda asked her to copy one clause.

Why keep it?

Because Renee read the document and realized the warehouse property was worth millions.

She planned to extort Linda.

Instead, she became another target.

Two nights before my dinner confrontation, someone broke into her apartment.

The folder was hidden behind a radiator and survived.

Inside was Frank’s complete final trust.

Including a sealed page Gabriella had never seen.

Frank had written:

Margaret has one additional beneficiary she has not been told about.

My hands went cold.

Gabriella opened the page.

The beneficiary was Gabriella Ruiz.

Why would my husband leave part of our family trust to our lawyer?

Then I read the explanation.

For services beyond legal counsel relating to Edward’s birth.

Edward stood up.

“What does that mean?”

Gabriella looked stunned.

“I don’t know.”

But I knew Frank.

He never wrote vague language without reason.

Then the sealed appendix named a hospital.

St. Matthew’s Chicago.

Date: thirty-eight years ago.

Edward’s birthday.

I thought the property conspiracy was the deepest secret in the trust—but Frank’s appendix showed he had paid Gabriella for something connected to the day Edward was born.

**The hospital record attached to the appendix listed a second male infant born to me that night.**

*The next chapter would force Edward to confront the possibility that the family Linda had been exploiting was not the family he thought he belonged to.*
