Chapter 11 - William Carter’s Promise

William Carter left a private letter to Linda.

My goal was to understand what she believed she was owed.

The letter said:

What the Brooks family took from us will return through you.

That made no sense.

My family had never known the Carters before Linda married Edward.

Then Michael’s ledger clarified it.

Frank once helped expose irregularities at St. Matthew’s.

William lost his administrator position.

He blamed Frank.

Not because Frank ruined him.

Because Frank stopped the placement income.

William spent the rest of his life telling Linda that the Brooks family had “stolen” their future.

When Linda met Edward years later, she knew exactly who he was.

Their first meeting was not accidental.

She attended a charity event after Peter told her Edward would be there.

Edward thought they met by chance.

Linda had targeted him.

That revelation hurt him more than the forged deed.

He asked her during a jail interview.

“Did you ever love me?”

Linda remained silent for a long time.

Then said, “I built my life around you.”

“That isn’t an answer.”

“No.”

It was the first honest answer she gave him.

She admitted she initially saw Edward as access.

Then she stayed because controlling him became easier than leaving.

Dylan, however, was real to her.

Her one emotional vulnerability.

She insisted every property move was meant to secure his future.

Again, harm renamed protection.

Then Detective Grant asked about Helen.

Linda admitted she told Mark to stop Helen from calling me.

She claimed she meant scare her.

Mark used the drug.

Peter suggested cleaning the kitchen.

Linda approved the cleanup after the fall.

She did not call 911 until twenty-six minutes later.

That delay mattered.

Helen might have survived with earlier treatment.

Linda did not directly administer the drug.

But she helped create the death.

Then Linda revealed why she chose the dinner confrontation.

She wanted me angry.

Humiliated.

She expected me to strike her or throw her out physically.

Dylan and Sarah would witness it.

Then she would claim elder cognitive instability and family violence.

The forged deed alone was weak.

She needed behavior.

My phone call ruined the script.

That explained why her confidence lasted so long.

She thought one emotional outburst would complete the case.

Then she admitted one more thing.

“Gabriella was never supposed to answer.”

“What?”

Linda had arranged for Gabriella’s office line to forward that evening.

Renee was supposed to redirect calls.

But I called Gabriella’s private home number from memory.

A number Linda did not know.

That tiny detail broke three years of planning.

Then Linda said something I did not expect.

“Peter was going to remove Edward after the warehouse sale.”

Edward stared at her.

“Remove?”

She looked away.

Peter had prepared forged evidence tying Edward to all six property transfers.

Once the money moved, he planned to report Edward anonymously.

Linda knew.

She intended to leave with Dylan before Edward was arrested.

I thought Linda’s final betrayal was stealing my house—but she had planned to sacrifice her husband after using him as the face of the entire operation.

**Linda’s own recorded interview established that Edward was never her partner in the endgame; he was the fall guy Peter intended to hand to prosecutors after the money disappeared.**

*The financial trail from Peter’s hidden account showed where that money was actually supposed to go—and the recipient was someone none of us had suspected.*
