Chapter 9 - My Mother Took Ethan

The school emailed surveillance stills through law enforcement.
I stared at my mother for the first time since I was twelve.
Older.
Thinner.
Gray threaded through dark hair.
But unmistakably Mary Carter.
She stood at the Suncrest reception desk wearing jeans and a navy jacket.
Beside her was a six-year-old boy.
Ethan.
My son.
He had Benjamin’s face.
My face.
Our family.
My mother’s hand rested lightly on his shoulder.
Not gripping.
Not controlling.
Protective.
That distinction mattered to me.
Perez said:
“School records show she has been listed as secondary emergency guardian for three years.”
“How?”
“Documents approved by Robert.”
My stomach tightened.
“So they work together.”
“Maybe.”
The archived cassette had shown Robert threatening Mary.
People can become allies later.
Or paperwork can be forged.
I was learning not to choose a theory before evidence.
Suncrest’s director told police that Mary visited monthly.
Ethan appeared attached to her.
She paid for clothing.
Attended school conferences.
Never stayed overnight.
Robert handled financial authorization remotely.
Dr. Holt signed clinical records.
The three adults formed a triangle around my son.
But motives were unclear.
Then the director said something important.
Mary had checked Ethan out after receiving a phone call.
She was visibly upset.
She told staff:
“Robert found the Florida site.”
Florida site.
Rachel’s house.
Mary may have known something was about to happen.
Could she have moved Ethan to protect him?
Or to prevent us finding him?
I listened to the next recovered cassette from the underground safe.
Dated twenty-five years earlier.
Mary and a woman named Susan.
My aunt.
Susan said:
“Robert is moving children through medical records.”
Mary:
“I know.”
Susan:
“He says it’s temporary protection.”
“From whom?”
“Families.”
“What families?”
“Rich ones.”
My stomach turned.
Susan continued:
“He finds divorce cases, abuse allegations, estates. He creates alternate placements.”
“Why?”
“Money.”
Then:
“And sometimes the parent really is dangerous.”
That complicated things.
Harbor Point may have begun as something else.
A clandestine protection network.
Then corruption.
Mary asked:
“Who decides?”
Susan laughed bitterly.
“Robert.”
There it was.
One man deciding who deserved children.
Dangerous even when intentions began well.
The tape ended with Susan telling Mary she had copied a master ledger.
Three months later, Susan supposedly died.
Maybe she disappeared too.
Perez checked boating records.
No body recovered.
Death declared after seven years.
Another legal death without remains.
Pattern.
Elena asked:
“What assets did Susan have?”
Good question.
Perez researched.
Susan had received the same malpractice settlement as Mary.
Her share:
$1.8 million.
After her presumed death, beneficiary:
Robert Carter.
My father accumulated money through disappearing women.
Mary.
Susan.
Then used it to build the Carter trust.
Maybe my entire inheritance was stolen.
At 3:00 p.m., Rachel requested to speak with me through attorneys.
Elena refused private contact.
We met in a monitored interview room with counsel.
Rachel looked exhausted.
No cream blouse now.
Jail-issued clothing.
Hair pulled back.
I sat across from her.
“Where is Ethan?”
“I don’t know.”
“Did you know my mother took him?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“Yesterday.”
“Why?”
“Because Robert was moving the children.”
“Why would Mary work against him?”
Rachel stared at me.
“You still think your mother is part of his operation.”
“I don’t know what to think.”
“She hates him.”
“Then why does she appear on Ethan’s guardianship?”
“To access him.”
That made sense.
Maybe.
“She spent years getting close enough that Robert trusted her with Ethan.”
“Why not contact me?”
Rachel’s expression softened strangely.
“She tried.”
My chest tightened.
“When?”
“After Benjamin was born.”
“No.”
“Yes.”
“I never heard from her.”
“Robert intercepted it.”
“How do you know?”
“I saw the letter.”
“What did it say?”
Rachel looked toward her lawyer.
He nodded.
“She told you Benjamin was alive.”
My hands curled.
“She knew?”
“Yes.”
“She could have come to me.”
“Robert threatened Ethan.”
“But Ethan was an infant.”
“Exactly.”
I stared.
Rachel continued:
“He separated the twins.”
“Why?”
“To control both sides.”
“Explain.”
“Benjamin stayed hidden locally. Ethan became leverage over Mary.”
“And you?”
“Benjamin became leverage over me.”
“You let him.”
Her eyes filled.
“Yes.”
No denial.
“Why?”
“Because Robert knew about Lily.”
I frowned.
“Lily was two.”
“He knew something about her birth.”
My stomach tightened.
“What?”
Rachel looked terrified even now.
“Daniel, Lily isn’t supposed to exist either.”
I stared.
“What does that mean?”
She shook her head.
“Ask Mary.”
“No.”
“Daniel—”
“You don’t get to hide behind another secret.”
Rachel’s lawyer interrupted.
“She is offering information in cooperation.”
“Then cooperate.”
Rachel wiped her face.
“When Lily was born, she had a blood abnormality.”
“I know. Mild anemia.”
“No.”
Rachel shook her head.
“The hospital found something genetic.”
“What?”
“Her blood type didn’t match what Robert expected.”
I frowned.
“Expected for what?”
“The trust.”
My skin prickled.
Rachel whispered:
“Robert tested all of your children against an old family sample.”
“Whose?”
“His.”
“Why?”
“To prove they were Carter descendants.”
“Of course they are.”
Rachel looked at me.
Then said:
“Lily wasn’t.”
The room went silent.
I stared.
“You’re saying I’m not her father?”
Rachel immediately shook her head.
“No.”
“Then what?”
“You are.”
“That makes no sense.”
“It means Robert isn’t your biological father.”
My entire body went cold.
Rachel continued:
“Lily’s DNA exposed it.”
I could barely hear.
“If Robert isn’t my father…”
“He had no biological relationship to your children.”
The Carter Protection Trust required descendants of Robert Carter.
If I was not Robert’s biological son, then Lily, Benjamin, and Ethan were not legal descendants under certain trust terms.
Unless documents hid it.
Unless Robert needed everyone to believe otherwise.
“Why would he care?”
Rachel whispered:
