Chapter 14 - THE OTHER PIPER

The child’s real name was Grace Ellis.

Ashbourne raised her inside a medical boarding school and told her she was my daughter.

Biologically, she was.

An embryo had been created during a fertility procedure I underwent after my suspension.

I believed doctors were treating ovarian damage.

They harvested eggs.

Grace was carried by a surrogate named Rachel Ellis, who was told the baby died.

The program assigned my name to Grace as a role, not a relationship.

Federal agents recovered her.

She did not know me.

She knew my surgeries.

My published papers.

My hand movements.

She had watched my career as training.

I did not claim her.

I introduced myself.

“My name is Piper.”

She answered, “Mine too.”

“You can keep it if you want.”

She looked confused.

The program expected competition.

Choice broke the script.

Grace entered independent care.

Rachel was found alive.

Reunion happened slowly.

Then Colton recovered enough to return home.

Ryan and Sarah rebuilt their family under therapy.

Linda moved into her own apartment and stopped making medical decisions for anyone without being asked.

Emma entered treatment and cooperation sentencing.

Marcus remained imprisoned.

Noah reunited gradually with relatives he chose.

Julian stayed in therapeutic placement.

William died under verified federal care before trial ended.

His testimony remained.

Vale and Ashbourne assets funded survivor-controlled medicine.

I returned to trauma surgery under independent oversight.

Not Saint Catherine.

A public hospital with no family trust.

My first drowning case after Colton was a teenager pulled from a river.

I performed the same compressions.

This time no hidden network waited.

He survived.

Ordinary rescue felt extraordinary.

Then Saint Catherine invited me to the reopening of its emergency department under new governance.

The old corridor remained.

The Chief of Emergency had resigned.

The wall where Malcolm first recognized me now carried a patient-rights statement.

I brought no family.

Colton asked to come.

He stood beside me.

A stretcher rolled through the doors.

A soaked boy.

Unconscious.

Same age Colton had been.

The paramedics said his name was Colton Morgan.

Our Colton stood beside me.

The new patient wore his face.

Same birthmark.

Same scar.

Another genetically identical child.

The network had created a duplicate nephew too.
