Chapter 5 - THE SISTER WHO DISAPPEARED

Emma Morgan would be thirty-eight.

Linda had seen her only once.

William Vale told her the baby died from respiratory failure. No body was shown.

Years later, Linda found a hospital invoice under another name.

She suspected Emma lived.

My father confronted Vale.

Six months later, his organ failure began.

The family had already lost a child before any of us understood the game.

The Virginia raid recovered Noah Bennett and three other children.

No Emma.

No Marcus.

No research archive.

Noah was alive but deeply conditioned.

He called Evelyn “Mother Doctor.”

He believed I abandoned him after surgery.

The same story Vale used publicly.

Rebuilding truth would take time.

Noah remembered a woman with my face working in the facility.

Emma.

My sister.

Vale had raised her as a trauma specialist.

She may have helped treat the children.

Victim and participant.

Both.

Then Marcus released a video.

Emma stood beside him in surgical scrubs.

She looked like me with darker hair and older eyes.

She said, “Piper, stop pretending you are rescuing them.”

Behind her, Colton’s medical chart appeared on a monitor.

“Every child you save enters another system.”

She claimed federal agencies wanted the regenerative trait for military medicine.

My task force denied it.

Documents showed some officials did seek access.

The corruption reached both private and public institutions.

Emma offered to protect Colton if I surrendered Noah’s evidence files.

I refused a private exchange.

She called me cold.

I called the demand another form of ownership.

Then Noah asked to speak with me.

He remembered Emma secretly lowering drug doses and leaving doors unlocked.

She had tried to help some children escape.

She also continued working inside the program.

Again, no clean role.

Federal agents traced Emma’s video to an abandoned surgical center near Omaha.

The building was empty.

But one operating room contained my old Saint Catherine ID badge.

The badge supposedly remained in hospital evidence.

Someone inside Saint Catherine had supplied it.

Dr. Malcolm Hayes, the ER chief who restored my emergency privileges, had access.

The man who welcomed me back might have been part of the network all along.
