Chapter 4 - MY MOTHER’S SECRET

Linda knew about the blood trait.

She admitted it after federal agents searched our family cabin.

My father suffered a severe industrial injury when I was nine. Doctors at Vale Research Hospital used experimental treatment developed from our family’s blood.

He recovered unexpectedly.

Then died six years later from unexplained organ failure.

Linda signed confidentiality papers in exchange for debt relief.

Evelyn’s father, William Vale, told her our family carried “healing blood.”

Linda thought it was a metaphor.

It was not.

The Vale program tracked Morgan descendants for decades.

Me.

Ryan.

Colton.

Potentially other children.

Why did Linda keep it secret?

She believed silence protected us.

When I entered medical school, she begged me not to choose trauma surgery.

I thought she doubted me.

She feared I would find the program.

Then Sarah—Ryan’s wife—discovered the Vale guardianship clause before her death.

Her highway crash was ruled accidental.

New evidence showed a Vale transport vehicle near the scene.

Sarah may have been killed because she tried to remove Colton from the program.

Ryan broke down.

His mother and wife both hid truths to protect him.

Their silence left him defenseless.

Then investigators found a recording Sarah left inside Colton’s toy box.

“If anything happens to me, Piper is the only Morgan they fear.”

Ryan looked at me.

“Why you?”

Because I was not merely a surgeon.

Three years earlier, after Noah vanished, I joined a federal medical-crimes task force under sealed status.

My suspension became cover.

My “lost career” allowed me to investigate Vale facilities.

I had not told my family because the case required secrecy.

That decision now stood beside every other hidden protection.

Ryan’s anger was justified.

“You let us think you failed.”

“I let them think I stopped looking.”

“And Sarah died anyway.”

No answer fixed that.

Then the task force traced Noah’s photograph to a private hospital beneath a luxury rehabilitation center in Virginia.

Federal agents prepared a raid.

Before they entered, Marcus Vale sent me a message.

BRING COLTON’S BLOOD SAMPLE, OR NOAH MOVES AGAIN.

A second message followed.

YOUR FAMILY HAS ALREADY LOST ONE CHILD.

ASK LINDA WHO.

My mother went white.

Ryan and I were not her only children.

A daughter had been born between us.

Piper’s—my—older sister.

Name: Emma Morgan.

Declared dead at birth.

Vale took her.
