Chapter 3 - The Daughter He Never Knew

The conversation moved away from the table.

But nobody left.

They were too curious.

People who enjoy watching someone fall apart always want to see what happens afterward.

General Hale asked me to walk with her toward the edge of the patio.

The golf course stretched behind us.

Bright summer sunlight.

Perfect scenery.

A completely different world from the one I had just experienced.

“You handled that well,” she said.

I looked back.

“At my own family?”

She nodded.

“Especially then.”

I smiled slightly.

Because anger was easy.

Control was harder.

General Hale glanced at my wings.

“Those represent more than a title.”

“I know.”

“They represent years nobody saw.”

That was the truth.

My father saw results.

He never saw the work.

The nights studying.

The deployments.

The decisions.

The lives affected by those decisions.

When I returned to the table, Gordon was waiting.

His expression had changed.

Less arrogant.

More uncertain.

“Claire.”

I stopped.

He rarely used my first name like that.

“I didn’t know.”

I looked at him.

“That was the problem.”

He had no answer.

Nathan suddenly spoke.

“So what exactly are you?”

The question sounded insulting.

But his confidence was gone.

General Hale answered.

“She is a Marine flight surgeon and a leader trusted with responsibilities you couldn’t imagine.”

Silence.

Gordon looked down.

Then at the folder.

“What decision?”

General Hale picked it up.

“That information belongs to Colonel Whitmore.”

My father’s face tightened.

Because he finally understood.
