The next morning, I arrived early.
A habit.
One I learned long before my family understood discipline.
General Hale was already there.
The sealed folder rested on the table.
Still closed.
“You’re patient,” she said.
“I’m trained.”
She smiled slightly.
Then she became serious.
“Your family’s reaction yesterday was not why I came.”
I nodded.
“I assumed that.”
“Good.”
She pushed the folder closer.
“This is about responsibility.”
Not promotion.
Not recognition.
Responsibility.
The difference mattered.
She explained that my actions, leadership, and judgment had been noticed over time.
Not because I sought attention.
Because I consistently did the work.
Then she said something unexpected.
“Your father’s opinion was never considered.”
I looked at her.
“That’s a strange thing to say.”
“Because you spent years measuring yourself against it.”
The words hit harder than I expected.
Because she was right.
I had spent years proving myself to someone who refused to see me.
General Hale finally touched the folder.
“This contains a decision.”
I looked at it.
“About me?”
“Yes.”
