Chapter 11 - Bethany Learned the Truth Too

Bethany read copies of Emily’s notebook through her attorney.

She called me afterward.

“I spent ten years blaming Mom.”

“You had reasons.”

“Dad started it.”

“Yes.”

She cried.

Not because Dad was innocent before and guilty now.

Because understanding the hierarchy of the deception changed her entire marriage.

Margaret had told Bethany that moving money was necessary because Robert knew nothing about their financial problems.

Bethany believed she was protecting Dad.

She sacrificed trust with Jason partly to protect a man who had created the debt himself.

Jason learned too.

It didn’t repair their marriage.

Some damage doesn’t reverse when the explanation improves.

But for the first time, they understood what had happened to them.

I had my own reckoning.

Emily had tried more than once to talk to me about my parents.

I remembered brushing her off.

“They’re helping us.”

“They’re family.”

“Mom’s just intense.”

I had made Emily carry suspicion alone because believing her would have required confronting people I loved.

That was my failure.

Not theirs.

Mine.

Then Dad requested a meeting.

My attorney suggested a controlled setting.

Bethany agreed to attend with counsel.

Margaret came too.

Dad looked twenty years older.

He began with the sentence I expected.

“I was going to fix it.”

Bethany laughed bitterly.

“When?”

Dad ignored her.

He looked at me.

“The duplex was supposed to protect all of us.”

“You used my identity.”

“I thought I could refinance you off.”

“You stole from my account.”

“Your mother did that.”

Margaret turned toward him.

For the first time, something in her expression broke.

“You told me to keep the loan current.”

“I didn’t tell you how.”

“You knew exactly how.”

There it was.

Their alliance finally splitting under the weight of specifics.

Then Bethany asked the question that mattered most.

“Why did you let me think Mom created all of this?”

Dad didn’t answer.

Margaret did.

“Because I let him.”

And suddenly the person who had spent years controlling everyone admitted what she had really been protecting.

Not money.

May you like

Not the house.

Her marriage.
