Chapter 6 - Bridget Prepared for My Wheelchair Before the Fall

Bridget’s explanation arrived through her attorney.
She had requested the trust amendment because I was working dangerous construction sites.
That was technically plausible.
I had been climbing scaffolds for fifteen years.
Then Rachel found the email that destroyed the innocent version.
Bridget to Martin:
IF DANIEL HAS AN ACCIDENT, I DON’T WANT ALMA MAKING EVERY DECISION.
Date:
Twenty-two days before my fall.
Martin:
Understandable. We can prepare contingency language.
Bridget:
HOW SERIOUS DOES IT HAVE TO BE?
My hands went cold.
Martin:
Permanent or extended incapacity.
Bridget:
WHAT COUNTS AS EXTENDED?
Martin explained.
Six months functional disability.
Wheelchair dependence.
Inability to perform independent mobility.
Bridget:
THAT SOUNDS SUBJECTIVE.
Martin:
Medical certification.
Then:
IF HE RECOVERS?
Martin:
Control reverts.
Bridget:
THEN THAT DOESN’T HELP MUCH.
I stared at the sentence.
That wasn’t concern.
That was motive.
Still not proof of an accident plot.
But enough to stop giving her benefit of the doubt.
Then another email.
Bridget:
MARGARET SAYS ROBERT’S OLD TRUST HAS ANOTHER CLAUSE.
Martin:
Do not discuss Margaret in email.
There.
Bridget knew Margaret was alive before my accident.
I looked at Alma.
My mother looked destroyed.
“How long did Bridget know your sister was alive?”
“I don’t know.”
“Did you?”
“No.”
“Are you sure?”
She looked at me.
“Yes.”
I believed her.
Maybe because betrayal looked different from guilt.
Then Rachel obtained Bridget’s phone backups.
Deleted messages.
Not all.
Enough.
BRIDGET TO MARGARET:
Daniel confirmed Stamford Tuesday.
MARGARET:
Martin knows.
BRIDGET:
You said nothing dangerous.
MARGARET:
That is still the plan.
My heart hammered.
Something was planned at Stamford.
Then:
BRIDGET:
What does “event” mean exactly?
MARGARET:
A documented failure.
BRIDGET:
With Daniel there?
MARGARET:
He needs to witness it.
That changed things.
Maybe the original plan was not to injure me.
A staged structural failure?
Why?
Insurance?
Contract dispute?
Then Margaret wrote:
Daniel will shut the project down if he sees the bad bracket fail under test.
There.
They planned a bracket failure.
Not necessarily with me standing on it.
Martin wanted me to witness defective materials.
Why?
Another email answered.
The Stamford renovation used steel supplied by Carter Materials Group.
A company tied to my late father’s estate.
If I formally documented defective materials, insurance liabilities could trigger a buyback clause.
Control of Carter Materials would shift.
Who wanted that?
Margaret.
She had been pushed out of that business years ago.
So perhaps the plot began as corporate sabotage:
Make a bracket fail during my inspection.
I condemn material.
Trigger legal consequences.
But something changed.
Someone put the bad bracket under the platform I physically stepped on.
Margaret’s email after my fall:
THIS WENT TOO FAR.
That sounded real.
Then who changed the plan?
Martin?
Bridget?
Someone else?
We found a text from Bridget the morning of the accident.
To Martin:
IS DANIEL SAFE?
8:32 a.m.
Martin:
YES.
My site entry:
8:41.
Fall:
9:07.
At 9:13:
Bridget:
WHAT HAPPENED?
No answer.
9:19:
BRIDGET:
MARTIN CALL ME NOW.
If genuine, she may not have expected injury.
But she had prepared financially.
And afterward, she chose to exploit it.
Both can be true.
Then Rachel asked:
“Why did Bridget want permanent disability now?”
Money.
We finally obtained full trust statements.
Since my accident, $4.8 million had moved out of the disability trust.
Some legitimate.
Hospital bills.
Home modifications.
Nursing.
Therapy.
But $1.6 million went to:
BVC Family Holdings.
Owner:
Bridget Carter.
My wife.
Purpose:
Home-care coordination and adaptive investment management.
She had paid herself more than a million dollars while I learned to transfer from bed to wheelchair.
Another $720,000 went to Martin’s firm.
Another $410,000 to Margaret-linked consulting entities.
Alma received nothing.
Diane received ordinary nursing salary.
Then one transfer made everyone stop.
$950,000.
Recipient:
Marcus Shaw Medical Consulting.
The doctor whose name appeared on my unexplained sedative orders.
The doctor who signed Margaret’s death certificate.
He was not peripheral.
He was being paid nearly a million dollars from my disability trust.
Then Rachel found his contract.
Scope:
Long-term neurological prognosis consultation.
He was scheduled to provide the second permanent-disability certification on Friday.
