Chapter 12 - THE SIGNATURE PAGE
Tessa had taken a picture of the photograph with her phone.
She didn't remember doing it at first.
Then investigators found it during voluntary disclosure.
The image was imperfect.
Glare across the surface.
Rachel seated at the kitchen table.
My father beside her.
Richard Bell standing behind them.
A document lay open.
Rachel held a pen.
The top line wasn't readable.
But the signature block was.
Rachel Carter.
Below it:
Member.
Beside her signature appeared another.
Margaret Carter.
I stared.
My mother had signed too.
She could no longer claim Rachel secretly inserted herself into the agreement.
Margaret participated.
David zoomed in.
“Look at the corner.”
A page number.

Nine pages.
The burned fragment from the box was only part of one.
If Rachel preserved the photograph, maybe she preserved more.
The tiny safe-deposit key became important again.
I requested records.
Rachel’s bank confirmed she had maintained a box jointly accessible only to herself.
After death, lawful estate procedures would be required.
Why hadn't anyone found it?
Because I never had the key.
And the bank mailed renewal notices to an old office address Rachel stopped using during treatment.
The box remained sealed.
For eighteen months.
My heart pounded.
“What are the odds the agreement is inside?” I asked Susan.
“We don't guess.”
Right.
The key itself was currently missing inside Margaret’s possession of the silver box.
But after legal pressure and an evidence-preservation demand, Margaret finally surrendered the box.
Not voluntarily.
Not gracefully.
But she surrendered it.
The photograph was missing.
The burned fragment remained.
Letters remained.
The tiny key remained.
I held it for the first time.
It felt absurdly small.
Rachel had told me the silver box was mine if she died.
My family had hidden it.
Now, finally, the key could lead somewhere they had never opened.

The recovered photograph clearly showed both Rachel and Margaret signing page seven of a nine-page agreement in Richard Bell’s presence, contradicting Margaret’s claim that Rachel acted without her knowledge.
