Chapter 1 - Where Is the Money?

Grandmother Margaret slammed her open palm onto the Thanksgiving table.

Coffee jumped from the mugs.

Silverware rattled against half-empty plates.

A candle rolled off the edge, and Aunt Patricia dropped to one knee trying to catch it before it hit the kitchen floor.

“Where is the money?”

Every conversation stopped.

I stood in the center of Patricia’s cramped Denver kitchen with my nine-month-old daughter pressed against my chest.

Lily stirred inside her faded pink blanket.

My worn sneakers were still damp from the snow outside. My gray T-shirt dress had a formula stain near the collar. I had slept three hours in two days.

I looked from Margaret to Patricia.

“What money?”

Margaret’s eyes moved slowly over me.

The cracked handbag hanging from my shoulder.

The empty formula container inside it.

The blanket I had washed so many times the fabric had become almost transparent.

Patricia rose too quickly and knocked her chair backward.

“It was handled.”

Margaret turned only her head.

The kitchen became even quieter.

She stepped toward me.

“I sent one hundred eighty thousand dollars.”

My knees weakened.

I caught the table with one hand while keeping Lily secure with the other arm.

“I received nothing.”

Patricia reached for Margaret’s phone.

Margaret caught her wrist and pushed her hand away.

Then she unlocked the screen.

“Bring every wire record,” she said into the phone.

She ended the call and walked into the narrow hallway.

The front-door key hung on a hook beside a framed family photograph.

Margaret removed it.

Closed her fist around it.

Then turned back toward us.

No one moved.

No one asked why she had taken the key.

They already knew.

Because the moment Margaret said $180,000, three relatives stopped looking at me.

They started looking at Patricia.

And beneath the Thanksgiving table runner, the corner of a sealed white envelope had begun to show.

👉 Before Margaret opened it, Patricia whispered one sentence that changed the question from theft to conspiracy.
