Chapter 9 - No One Opens the Door

Eric knocked.

Lily startled against my chest.

I moved away from the hallway.

Margaret took my phone.

“What do you want?” she asked.

Eric paused.

“Who is this?”

“The woman whose money you accepted.”

Silence.

Then Eric laughed.

“Patricia said the family had an agreement.”

Patricia rushed toward the phone.

Margaret held it away.

“What agreement?”

“That she would pay what she owed, and I wouldn’t pursue custody.”

I felt sick.

Eric continued.

“But she missed the deadline. So I’m here for my daughter.”

“You abandoned her before she was born.”

“That’s not what the court documents say.”

“What court documents?” I asked.

Eric heard my voice.

“Your aunt has copies.”

Everyone turned toward Patricia.

She opened her handbag with trembling hands.

Inside was a petition for emergency custody.

It accused me of homelessness, unemployment, neglect, and mental instability.

There were photographs of my car.

Pictures of me sleeping in the driver’s seat while Lily rested safely in a travel bassinet.

Images taken without my knowledge.

Eric had been following us.

The petition also claimed Patricia witnessed me refusing family assistance.

I looked at her.

“You were going to testify against me?”

Patricia began crying.

“I thought it would force you to accept help.”

“By giving my baby to him?”

“Temporarily.”

Margaret grabbed the front-door key.

Then stopped.

Opening the door would allow Eric inside.

Instead, she called 911.

She explained there was a man outside attempting to take an infant using potentially fraudulent documents.

Eric heard through the phone.

He began pounding on the door.

“You can’t keep me from my daughter!”

Lily cried.

I moved into the kitchen corner and rocked her carefully.

Margaret stood between us and the hallway.

“Police are coming,” she said.

Eric shouted that he had rights.

Margaret answered through the closed door.

“You sold those rights every time you accepted money to disappear.”

Sirens sounded outside.

Eric ran.

He did not get far.

Officers stopped him near the driveway.

Inside his car, they found printed custody papers, a packed infant car seat, and a passport application bearing Lily’s photograph.

The destination listed was Mexico.

He had not come for a court hearing.

He planned to take her.

Patricia covered her face.

“I didn’t know.”

Margaret looked at her.

“You made ignorance your excuse for every harm you funded.”

The officers asked to enter.

Margaret unlocked the door.

Before they crossed the threshold, she turned toward the family.

“No one lies now.”

👉 Eric’s car contained one more document—an agreement signed by Patricia transferring control of my trust if I lost custody of Lily.
