Chapter 12 - I SIGNED THE DIVORCE

Three weeks later, I signed.

No dramatic hesitation.

No running down courthouse steps.

Derek signed too.

The marriage ended legally.

Ten years reduced to a decree containing property terms, support provisions, financial settlements, and names.

I restored my maiden name.

Elena Mercer.

I had considered keeping Callahan professionally.

Then realized I did not need the continuity.

My consulting work grew.

Natalie and I formed a small strategy firm.

Mercer & Brooks.

Not an empire.

Five employees by year two.

Clients I liked.

Work I understood.

Money I could trace.

I reviewed every account.

Not obsessively.

Competently.

Derek continued paying obligations under the settlements.

Apex completed its structured payments.

Holdings was dissolved after assets were distributed.

The VectorHalo investment was ultimately recharacterized and resolved through settlement between the entities, with Holdings receiving value for funds contributed.

That prevented the $1.2 million from simply vanishing into Derek’s company.

Corporate counsel documented the resolution.

No mystery money remained.

The criminal probation continued.

Derek complied.

No violations.

He completed intervention programming.

Maintained therapy.

Did not contact me directly outside approved channels.

Then something unexpected happened.

He started teaching.

Not publicly about redemption.

Nothing so self-serving.

A business ethics adjunct course at a community college.

When Rachel told me, I laughed.

“Of course.”

But later I heard from a mutual friend that his first lecture began:

“Legal authority and ethical permission are not the same thing.”

I hated how much I liked that.

People are allowed to change after losing access to you.

May you like

Their growth does not create a debt.

I learned that too.
