Chapter 1 - The Shard in the Toy Box

“DON’T TOUCH HER!”
Eighteen-month-old Noah stood in front of his little sister with both arms spread.
Vanessa Carter swung the wooden hanger.
It struck the top of Noah’s head.
He lurched forward, crying, but somehow stayed between Vanessa and Maisie.
She raised the hanger again.
Then the front door slammed open.
Daniel Carter stepped inside.
His briefcase hit the oak floor.
“Vanessa!”
He crossed the room before she could swing again, seized her wrist, ripped the hanger from her hand, and shoved it away.
“How dare you hit my child?”
Vanessa stumbled back against the sofa.
“It isn't what you think.”
Noah wrapped both arms around Daniel’s leg.
His whole body shook.
Then he whispered something that made Daniel stop breathing.
“She hurts us when Daddy goes away.”
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Daniel stared down at his son.
“What?”
Noah buried his face against Daniel’s trousers.
Behind him, Maisie was staring toward the toy box by the staircase.
Vanessa saw it.
Her face changed.
“Maisie.”
The little girl walked toward it.
Vanessa lunged.
Daniel caught her arm.
“Where are you going?”
“Stop her!”
Maisie opened the toy box.
Stuffed animals.
Wooden blocks.
A toy piano.
Then her fingers found a tissue bundle tucked beneath an old rabbit.
Vanessa went white.
“PUT IT BACK!”
Maisie unwrapped it.
Inside was a small shard of old glass.
Nothing remarkable at first glance.
Except Vanessa looked terrified of it.
Daniel slowly looked from the glass to his wife.
“What is that?”
Vanessa said nothing.
Maisie pressed the wrapped edge against her pink dress.
Her hand trembled.
Then she pointed toward the staircase.
“Mommy was holding this when she fell.”
Silence.
Daniel’s first wife, Rachel, had died fourteen months earlier.
Everyone had been told she slipped on those stairs.
Daniel had believed it.
He had forced himself to believe it.
Until now.
“What did you say?” he whispered.
Maisie pointed again.
“Mommy.”
Vanessa yanked against Daniel’s grip.
“She doesn't remember anything. She was a baby!”
Daniel tightened his hold.
“Then why are you scared?”
“I’m not.”
“You were trying to take that glass from her.”
“Because she could cut herself!”
Daniel looked down at the tissue.
There was something strange about the shard.
One edge was smooth.
Decorative.
Not from a drinking glass.
Not from a window.
He had seen that exact shade before.
Deep red.
Almost burgundy.
His eyes moved toward the entryway.
A red dress still hung there from that afternoon’s family gathering.
But the color dragged another memory from somewhere deeper.
Rachel had owned a red glass perfume bottle.
A vintage bottle Daniel had given her on their fifth anniversary.
The bottle had disappeared after her death.
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
“Where is Rachel’s perfume bottle?”
Vanessa stared at him.
“What?”
“The red glass one.”
“I don't know.”
“You packed her things.”
“No, I didn't.”
“You told me you did.”
Her lips parted.
Daniel felt the room tilt.
Fourteen months ago, Vanessa had been Rachel’s closest friend.
She had helped Daniel after the funeral.
Brought meals.
Watched the children.
Stayed late when Daniel couldn't sleep.
Six months later, she became his wife.
At the time, people whispered.
Daniel ignored them.
Grief made time strange.
Loneliness made bad decisions feel necessary.
Now Noah was clinging to him.
Maisie was holding a piece of Rachel’s missing perfume bottle.
And Vanessa looked like she had seen a ghost.
Daniel picked up his phone.
Vanessa’s voice sharpened.
“Who are you calling?”
“My sister.”
“For what?”
“To take the kids.”
“No.”
Daniel looked at her.
It was the first time she realized the balance had changed.
“You don't get a vote.”
Vanessa’s eyes moved to the shard again.
Daniel saw it.
And suddenly he knew one thing with absolute certainty.
Whatever happened to Rachel on those stairs, Vanessa knew more than she had ever admitted.
Then Noah tugged Daniel’s trousers.
“Daddy?”
Daniel crouched.
“What, buddy?”
Noah pointed toward the staircase too.
Then toward the hallway.
And whispered:
“Mommy screamed Vanessa’s name.”
Daniel stopped breathing.
Vanessa closed her eyes.
May you like
Only for one second.
But Daniel saw it.
