Chapter 4 - Rachel's Warning

The second video was audio only.

Rachel’s phone had apparently been inside a handbag.

Vanessa’s voice came first.

“You don't get to shut me out.”

Rachel answered:

“This is my house.”

“And those are his children.”

“My children.”

A pause.

Then Vanessa laughed.

“You really think Daniel tells you everything?”

Daniel felt sick.

Rachel’s voice sharpened.

“If this is about that kiss years ago, I already know.”

Daniel went still.

Rachel knew.

Vanessa stopped speaking.

Then Rachel said:

“Daniel told me before we got married.”

Daniel’s eyes filled.

He had forgotten.

Not the confession.

The relief.

Rachel had forgiven him immediately.

He had buried the memory beneath years of marriage.

Vanessa had apparently spent years believing she held a secret that Rachel already knew.

On the recording, Vanessa sounded different after that.

Colder.

“You always win.”

Rachel replied:

“This isn't a competition.”

“To you.”

“No. To you.”

There was movement.

A door.

Then Rachel said:

“Don't come here again without calling.”

The recording ended.

Detective Brooks leaned back.

“That establishes conflict.”

“But not murder.”

“No.”

Daniel hated hearing the word.

Murder.

It made Rachel’s death feel new again.

Fresh.

Violent.

Personal.

The forensic team recovered another fragment.

A photograph.

Rachel had photographed a text conversation.

Vanessa:

HE WILL REALIZE HE MARRIED THE WRONG WOMAN.

Rachel:

Stay away from my husband and my children.

Vanessa:

You don't know what he's promised me.

Daniel whispered:

“I never promised her anything.”

Brooks nodded.

“People can invent promises.”

Then the storage unit came back into the investigation.

A warrant process took time.

During that delay, Vanessa tried something desperate.

She came to Claire’s house.

Claire saw her through the door camera.

“Let me see Noah.”

“No.”

“I'm his mother now.”

Claire’s expression hardened.

“You are absolutely not.”

Vanessa lowered her voice.

“He's confused.”

“He has a bruise from you.”

“Daniel did that.”

Claire almost laughed.

“You're trying that already?”

Vanessa’s face changed.

“Tell Daniel those children are going to destroy everything Rachel wanted.”

“What does that mean?”

Vanessa stepped closer to the camera.

“Ask him who Rachel was meeting before she died.”

Then she left.

Claire sent the footage to Brooks.

Daniel watched it twice.

“Who was Rachel meeting?”

Rebecca checked Rachel’s calendar backups.

There was an appointment two days before her death.

Only initials:

M.H.

Daniel’s stomach dropped.

Marcus Halpern?

No.

Different story.

Different life.

He searched Rachel’s contacts.

M.H. was Michael Hayes.

A private investigator.

Daniel stared at the name.

Rachel had hired an investigator.

Rebecca located him.

Michael answered immediately when Rachel’s name was mentioned.

“I wondered if someone would ever call.”

Daniel’s skin went cold.

“What did she hire you for?”

“Vanessa Carter.”

“Why?”

“She believed Vanessa was entering your house.”

Daniel stopped.

“What?”

“Rachel said things were moving.”

“What things?”

“Children’s toys. Medicine. Mail.”

Exactly the kind of quiet intrusion designed to make someone question themselves.

“Did you find proof?”

“Yes.”

Daniel gripped the phone.

“What?”

“Vanessa had copied your house key.”

Silence.

“She entered at least four times when Rachel was out.”

“Why?”

“I never determined that.”

“Did Rachel know?”

“I told her the morning she died.”

Daniel’s throat closed.

“What did she say?”

“She said she was confronting Vanessa.”

Brooks asked:

“Did you advise against that?”

“Yes.”

“What happened?”

“Rachel said Vanessa had taken something from her bedroom.”

“What?”

Michael hesitated.

“A red perfume bottle.”

Daniel looked at the glass shard.

“Why would Vanessa steal a perfume bottle?”

“I don't think she wanted the bottle.”

“What did she want?”

May you like

Michael answered:

“Something Rachel had hidden inside it.”
