Chapter 6 - The Missing Eleven Minutes

The security footage was incomplete.

Of course it was.

The living room camera had been disabled at 5:21 p.m.

It resumed at 5:32.

Rachel’s emergency call was never made.

Vanessa called 911 at 5:42.

Eleven missing minutes.

But the hallway camera survived longer.

At 5:18, Rachel entered from the kitchen.

Red perfume bottle in one hand.

Phone in the other.

At 5:19, Vanessa appeared from the front hallway.

Daniel stopped breathing.

Vanessa had lied.

She was already inside the house.

Rachel backed toward the staircase.

No audio.

At 5:20, Vanessa pointed at the bottle.

Rachel shook her head.

Vanessa stepped closer.

Rachel raised her phone as if recording.

Then—

The footage froze.

Corrupted.

Daniel slammed his palm against the table.

“That's it?”

Brooks nodded.

“For now.”

“Can it be recovered?”

“They're trying.”

“What happens at 5:32?”

The next playable frame showed the empty hallway.

Rachel was gone.

Vanessa was gone.

A small red fragment lay on the floor beside the stairs.

Daniel stared.

“And the kids?”

Brooks checked timestamped footage from the nursery camera.

Noah was in a playpen.

Maisie was crawling nearby.

The nursery door was open.

At 5:23, Maisie disappeared from camera view.

At 5:27, she returned.

Carrying something wrapped in white cloth.

Daniel leaned forward.

The image was poor.

But it was the tissue bundle.

The shard.

Maisie crawled toward her toy box and dropped it inside.

Daniel covered his face.

“She saw something.”

“Possibly.”

“She took that glass from the stairs.”

“Possibly.”

Brooks would not give him certainty she didn't have.

Daniel respected her for it.

Then the recovered metadata gave them another clue.

Rachel’s phone connected to the upstairs Wi-Fi node at 5:20.

Then disconnected at 5:22.

If Rachel’s phone moved upstairs, Rachel may have been moving up the stairs during the confrontation.

Or Vanessa had the phone.

No one knew.

Then Brooks interviewed Vanessa.

She brought an attorney.

Her story changed.

She now admitted she had been at the house before Rachel fell.

“I forgot.”

“You forgot being inside a house where your best friend died minutes later?”

“I was traumatized.”

“What were you arguing about?”

“We weren't.”

“The footage shows confrontation.”

“We were talking.”

“What was in Rachel’s hand?”

“I don't remember.”

“Why was her perfume bottle in your storage unit?”

Vanessa said nothing.

Her attorney intervened.

Then Brooks asked:

“Why did you tell Daniel you arrived after the fall?”

Vanessa looked directly at her.

“Because I knew he'd blame me.”

“For what?”

Silence.

“For being there.”

Then she made her first major claim.

“Rachel came at me.”

Daniel watched the interview recording later.

His blood ran cold.

Vanessa continued:

“She was hysterical.”

“There are no defensive injuries documented on you.”

“She didn't hit me.”

“What did she do?”

“She threatened me.”

“With what?”

“The bottle.”

Daniel whispered:

“Liar.”

But Brooks kept neutral.

“What happened next?”

Vanessa’s attorney stopped her.

The interview ended.

Daniel felt rage rising.

Then Rebecca showed him something important.

Rachel’s autopsy reported injuries consistent with a fall.

But there was one small bruise on Rachel’s upper arm.

Finger-shaped?

The original examiner had called it nonspecific.

Not enough to prove restraint.

But now it mattered.

Then another recovered file arrived.

Rachel had managed to record eight seconds of audio immediately before the security gap.

Her voice:

“Give me my phone.”

Vanessa:

“Delete it.”

Rachel:

“Get out.”

Then glass shattered.

And Vanessa screamed:

“You think Daniel will believe you over me?”

The file cut.

Daniel sat frozen.

Rachel had been recording Vanessa.

Vanessa knew it.

And she wanted the recording deleted.

But why?

What had Rachel captured before those final eight seconds?
