Chapter 10 - Rachel’s Envelope

Rachel arrived with a sealed envelope.

My goal was to learn what she knew.

She looked like Gavin around the eyes.

Older.

Harder.

She said:

“I’m sorry I stayed away.”

Then:

“Your mother contacted me.”

My breath caught.

Mom found Rachel through old court records.

They met twice.

Rachel warned her Harriet used medication manipulation with clients—not usually to poison, but to create confusion.

Mom began documenting.

Then Rachel handed me an audio recorder.

Mom carried it the night she died.

Found by Rachel three days later.

How?

Mom had hidden it under loose floorboard in kitchen, then texted Rachel location.

Message sent 8:40 p.m.

Before Gavin arrived.

Rachel retrieved it after funeral before Harriet could.

Why wait thirteen years to reveal?

She feared Harriet’s reach.

Then when she learned I married Gavin, she tried contacting me once.

Email went to spam.

Then Mom died.

Rachel became afraid.

Not admirable.

Human.

Then we played recording.

8:57 p.m.

Mom:

Gavin, I know about the transfer.

Gavin:

I didn’t file it.

Mom:

You witnessed it.

Gavin:

Mom said it was temporary.

Mom:

Your mother lies.

Then movement.

Gavin:

You shouldn’t have eaten that honey.

Mom:

What?

Silence.

Then Gavin:

Nothing.

That line was terrible.

He knew.

Then later:

Mom:

I feel dizzy.

Gavin:

Sit down.

He helped her.

He did not push her.

Then:

Gavin:

I’m calling Samantha.

Mom:

No. Not until I understand what your mother did.

Then phone buzz.

Gavin:

She’s here.

Mom:

Who?

Door opens.

Harriet’s voice.

HARRIET:

We need to finish this.

Gavin:

No.

Harriet:

Go home.

Gavin:

I’m staying.

Harriet:

Then Samantha learns everything tonight.

Silence.

Then Gavin:

I’m sorry, Evelyn.

Footsteps.

Door closes.

He left.

Recording continued.

Mom:

What did you put in the honey?

Harriet:

Enough to make you listen.

There.

Direct admission.

Not necessarily lethal intent.

Then Mom:

You forged my signature.

Harriet:

You were going to sign.

Mom:

No.

Harriet:

You were going to ruin everyone.

Then a scrape.

Mom breathing harder.

Harriet:

Sit down.

Mom:

Get away from me.

Footsteps.

Then crash.

Then silence.

Then Harriet:

Evelyn?

More silence.

Then:

Oh God.

Then movement.

Phone buttons.

But no 911 call immediately.

Then Harriet whispered:

Think.

That delay was devastating.

Then recording stopped two minutes later.

Hospital call records showed 911 placed eleven minutes after estimated fall.

Harriet had time.

Did she push Mom?

Recording did not capture direct struggle clearly.

Could be Mom backed away and fell.

Could be contact.

Then forensic audio found a sharp fabric pull immediately before crash.

Possible grab.

Not enough.

Then Harriet’s eventual call said:

“She fell.”

True.

Maybe.

Then Rachel said Mom had installed a kitchen motion camera.

Harriet removed it after fall.

How did Rachel know?

Mom told her.

Police never found it.

Then Rachel handed over the SD card.

She had taken it from the hidden floorboard too.

Video.

Mom backing toward basement stairs.

Harriet reached out.

Grabbed Mom’s wrist.

Mom pulled away.

Lost balance.

Fell backward.

Harriet did not shove.

But she initiated physical restraint while Mom was drugged and unstable.

That mattered legally.

Then Harriet stood frozen.

Did not immediately call help.

Then she moved to table.

Took documents.

Then called.

Cause of fall:

Resistance during unlawful restraint after deliberate drugging.

That was the clearest evidence yet.

I thought my mother’s death might remain ambiguous forever—but Rachel’s video showed exactly how Harriet’s coercion caused the fall.

**Harriet did not push my mother down the stairs, but she drugged her, grabbed her when she tried to escape, and then delayed help after the fall.**

*The next part of the video showed what Harriet removed from the house before calling 911—and why Gavin spent years terrified of the blue file.*
