Chapter 5 - The Recording

Gavin recorded Harriet two days after Mom’s funeral.
My goal was to hear it.
He had deleted the file.
Forensics recovered it.
GAVIN:
Did you go back to the house?
HARRIET:
Why does it matter?
GAVIN:
Because she was alive when I left.
HARRIET:
And unstable.
GAVIN:
You said we only needed the signature.
HARRIET:
We got the signature.
GAVIN:
She didn’t sign.
Silence.
Then Harriet:
Lower your voice.
Gavin:
You forged it.
Harriet:
I fixed a problem.
Then the line that changed my understanding:
Gavin:
And the stairs?
Harriet:
Accidents happen to dizzy women.
Not a confession.
But close enough to justify deeper investigation.
Then Gavin said:
“I’m not covering murder.”
Harriet answered:
“Then don’t call it murder.”
I had to stop the recording.
Breathe.
Then continue.
Harriet reminded Gavin the loan would destroy him too.
Why?
He had personally guaranteed $4 million.
He had invested in Whitmore Family Holdings.
If it collapsed, his career and assets disappeared.
Then she said:
“You wanted Samantha. Now keep her calm.”
That explained the proposal.
Maybe not love.
Containment.
Then Gavin:
“I do love her.”
Harriet:
Then prove it by protecting her from this.
That sentence made me sick.
Marry the victim’s daughter.
Keep her close.
Control what she learns.
Frame concealment as protection.
Then Gavin’s recorded reply:
“She can never know.”
There it was.
He chose.
Then after Mom’s funeral, he proposed within two months.
Too fast.
I thought grief made me cling to him.
He knew exactly why I was vulnerable.
Then Elena checked the engagement timeline.
One week before proposing, Gavin transferred Mom’s shares into his personal holding company.
He had financial motive to bind me before I discovered transfer.
Then he drafted a prenup.
I remembered.
He told me it protected both of us.
Clause:
Each spouse waives claims to premarital business interests.
That included stolen Carter shares.
I signed while grieving.
His concealment became legally shielded.
Then why keep me married nearly five years?
Because the prenup had a sunset review at year five for undisclosed assets.
My attorney inserted that clause.
Gavin agreed because he thought I would never discover the shares.
Then three weeks ago, I found a tax document showing Carter Packaging dividends in Gavin’s account.
I asked.
He said inheritance.
From whom?
He changed subject.
That was when abuse escalated.
Then I searched the filing cabinet.
Harriet caught me.
Then came the storage-room lock.
Cause and effect.
Then Gavin admitted in interrogation he married me partly to control legal exposure.
Partly.
He still insisted he loved me.
Both could be true.
Ugly.
Then investigators asked about Mom’s fall.
He denied being present.
Evidence supported that.
Then Harriet’s GPS placed her nearby.
Then one neighbor came forward.
She had seen a woman in a purple coat leaving Mom’s back gate around 9:45.
Harriet owned a purple coat.
Not unique.
But consistent.
Then police found an old dry-cleaning receipt for that coat.
Date:
Morning after Mom died.
Service:
Stain removal.
Type:
Honey/oil residue on sleeve.
Tiny detail.
Not proof of violence.
But tied to contaminated honey.
Then one final piece in the recording:
GAVIN:
If Samantha ever finds the blue file, we’re done.
Harriet:
Then make sure she never does.
The blue file existed for years.
Gavin knew.
That meant the storage-room imprisonment was not spontaneous rage.
It was evidence control.

**Gavin’s own recording proved he married me while knowingly hiding the forged share transfer and the circumstances surrounding my mother’s death.**
*But the next corporate document showed Harriet had another reason to keep me married to Gavin—one that had nothing to do with Mom’s shares.*
