Chapter 1 - THE SLAP

Cassandra Blake slapped my five-year-old daughter so hard that Sophie fell into my arms.
The champagne glass beside us shattered across the marble floor.
“Cry again!” Cassandra screamed. “No one here cares about you!”
For one second, the ballroom stopped.
More than three hundred guests stood beneath crystal chandeliers in gowns, tuxedos, and expensive silence.
Sophie’s light blue princess dress twisted beneath her knees. A bright red mark spread across her cheek. She clutched my waist and sobbed into the navy fabric of my evening gown.
I wrapped both arms around her.
“What did you do?”
Cassandra lifted her chin.
“She spilled champagne on me.”
“She is five.”
“She should learn control.”
My husband reached us before I could move.
Jonathan Pierce did not look at Sophie’s face.
He grabbed my arm.
Hard.
Then he pointed toward the floor in front of Cassandra.
“Kneel. Now... or get out of my house!”
The guests recoiled.
Nobody stepped forward.
My mother-in-law, Patricia, crossed her arms beside the orchestra platform.
She looked proud.
That was the moment I understood the gala had not gone wrong.
It was going exactly as they had planned.
I pulled Sophie behind me.
Then I removed my wedding ring.
Jonathan smirked.
“You’re not going anywhere.”
I threw the ring directly at his face.
It struck his cheek and spun across the marble.
“Hold onto your house,” I shouted. “You’re about to lose everything else!”
The ballroom stayed silent.
Jonathan bent, picked up the ring with the sole of his shoe, and crushed it against the floor.
Cassandra laughed.
Patricia smiled.
“No one’s going to save you dogs,” Jonathan said.
I did not answer.
I smiled.
Behind him, the enormous ballroom doors began to open.
Every guest turned.
Jonathan kept laughing for one second too long.
Then polished black leather shoes stepped through the entrance.
A tailored navy suit.
Silver cuff links.
A sealed black folder beneath one arm.
The man’s face remained hidden behind the doors.
Jonathan turned.
His confidence vanished.
I looked directly at him.
“Now it’s your turn.”
The stranger walked forward.
Every member of the Pierce Holdings board stood at once.
Jonathan went pale.
The man was Elias Ashford, chairman of Ashford International and trustee of the debt holding Jonathan’s entire company.
He stopped beside Sophie, saw the mark on her cheek, and asked, “Who touched my granddaughter?”
Jonathan stared at me.
“Granddaughter?”
I had never told him because six years earlier my father made me promise no Pierce would know Sophie’s bloodline until the Ashford succession audit ended.
Elias placed the folder on the nearest table.
“Before this evening ends, you will explain why your mistress assaulted the child who owns the note holding your company.”
Cassandra stopped smiling.
Patricia whispered, “Impossible.”
Inside the folder lay Sophie’s trust certificate and one page stamped PIERCE HOLDINGS — DEFAULT TRIGGERED.
Then the projector switched on by itself.
Security footage showed Jonathan meeting Cassandra and Patricia three hours earlier.
“Make Rachel lose control,” Jonathan said.
Cassandra asked, “And the child?”
“Use her.”
The loading bar reached ninety-nine percent.
Then my own voice came through the speakers.
“If this video is playing, Rachel Ashford has already been replaced.”
The ballroom doors slammed shut.

From the balcony, another woman in a navy gown stepped into the light wearing my face.
