Chapter 6 - Vanessa Had Recorded More Than My Humiliation

Vanessa called again that night.

This time she sounded different.

“Claire, I need my phone.”

“You have your phone.”

“My old phone.”

I remembered.

Three months earlier, she cracked her screen during a wedding setup.

I had taken the damaged device home because I was transferring vendor photos for her.

Then Lily got sick.

The phone ended up in a drawer.

I had forgotten it existed.

Apparently Vanessa hadn’t.

“Why?”

“Business files.”

“I’ll have it sent to the company.”

“No.”

Too fast.

“Why no?”

Silence.

Then:

“Just don’t turn it on.”

Of course I turned it on.

Not to dig through private messages recklessly.

I called my attorney first.

Once relevant financial records needed preserving, we handled the device properly.

The old phone contained company materials Vanessa had legitimately asked me to transfer.

Among them were video drafts.

Most were event clips.

One was different.

Olivia and Vanessa sitting at the Bennett kitchen table.

The camera had apparently been left running after Vanessa filmed a promotional video.

Olivia’s voice:

“Claire cannot see final billing.”

Vanessa:

“She barely looks anymore.”

Olivia:

“Keep her on vendors and service. Richard handles her.”

I watched it twice.

Service.

Richard had called me a servant in front of Lily.

Apparently the role was not only emotional.

It was operational.

Keep Claire busy doing the actual work.

Keep her away from the numbers.

Then Vanessa said:

“What if Julian ever audits?”

Olivia laughed.

“He hasn’t looked at a real invoice in twenty years.”

That sentence changed everything.

Because it suggested the current billing scheme depended on something older than my marriage.

Something Olivia had learned decades earlier.

Then came the line that made me stop the video.

Vanessa asked:

“What about Ruth?”

Olivia answered:

“Ruth is dead.”

Pause.

“Dead women don’t reopen books.”

I sat completely still.

My grandmother’s name had not been forgotten.

Olivia had been relying on her silence.

And I had spent seven years working inside the system built by the woman Ruth had accused.
