Chapter 6 - SERENA'S VERSION

Serena asked to speak with me.

I almost refused.

Then Dana said, “Listen before deciding whether she matters.”

We met in a conference room at Dana's office.

Serena arrived without Teresa.

Without Marcus.

Without Julian.

That alone told me something had changed.

She placed her handbag on the table.

“I saw Julian in your office.”

“When?”

“December.”

My pulse slowed.

“What was he doing?”

“He had papers from your locked drawer.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

Serena looked away.

“Because I thought it was family stuff.”

I laughed once.

“That's your answer?”

“No.”

She swallowed.

“I also didn't want him telling Mom what I was doing with Harbor Ridge.”

There it was.

Self-interest.

At least it was honest.

Serena admitted Marcus asked her to become a signer on Harbor Ridge because “Mom needed a clean family entity.”

She signed.

She received money.

She spent part of it.

She claimed she believed the funds were legitimate consulting distributions approved by me.

“Did you do consulting?”

“No.”

“Then what exactly did you think you were being paid for?”

Her face tightened.

“Being a shareholder family member.”

“You aren't an employee.”

“I know that now.”

“You knew it then.”

She stopped pretending.

“Yes.”

That answer made her more useful.

Not innocent.

Useful.

Then she described December 14.

She had come to our house to borrow one of my dresses for a charity gala.

I was traveling.

Julian was in my home office.

My locked desk drawer was open.

He held a sheet covered in six-digit codes.

Serena asked what they were.

Julian said:

“Clara makes everything harder than it needs to be.”

Serena did nothing.

I sat still.

“You watched him steal security codes and walked away?”

“Yes.”

The betrayal wasn't only Julian.

This family had trained itself not to ask questions when answers might cost money.

Serena also admitted something else.

Teresa had told her the new $2.8 million Harbor Ridge payment was “temporary.”

“Temporary for what?”

“She wouldn't say.”

“Did you know about Briarwood?”

Serena shook her head.

I believed that only partially.

Then she produced text messages.

Teresa to family group:

Clara will sign Thursday. Julian, make sure she understands there is no alternative.

Marcus:

What if she refuses?

Teresa:

She won't.

Julian:

Leave it to me.

Date:

The morning of the dinner.

My hands went cold.

That wasn't proof they planned violence.

It was proof the pressure was coordinated.

Then another message.

Sent after Evelyn knocked.

Marcus:

This is blown.

Teresa:

Nobody says anything about prior wires.

Prior wires.

Plural.

Not Harbor Ridge alone.

The auditors searched related vendors.

Two more entities appeared.

Kingswell Projects.

Northline Strategies.

Both had received payments approved under my credentials.

Combined total:

$3.76 million.

Harbor Ridge was only the visible edge.

My career wasn't threatened by one forged wire.

Someone had been using my authority for nearly two years.

📖 Serena gave me the first family messages tying Julian to the pressure campaign, but the new vendors revealed a fraud large enough to threaten Vance Meridian itself. 👇
