Chapter 3 - ELEANOR’S SIGNATURE

Eleanor had signed her name beneath mine.

That mattered because forgery rarely survives on one false mark alone.

It survives through people willing to pretend they witnessed something that never happened.

Rachel enlarged the deed of trust on her tablet.

The document claimed I had personally appeared before a notary at Bennett Ridge Estate six weeks earlier and signed my apartment as collateral supporting a Bennett Reserve Holdings obligation.

I had not been at the estate that day.

I had been in Seattle for work.

My calendar could prove it.

Hotel records could prove it.

Airline records could prove it.

And my mother-in-law had signed a declaration saying she watched me do the impossible.

Dad sat beside my urgent-care bed, reading without interrupting.

I watched him from the corner of my eye.

We had not been close for three years.

Not since Adrian convinced me that every question Dad asked about Bennett finances was another attempt to run my adult life.

The painful part was that Adrian had not invented the entire problem.

Dad could be intrusive.

After Mom died, he had spent years trying to protect me from every bad decision by preventing me from making any decision without him. When Adrian entered my life, being chosen by someone who said, “You don’t need permission,” felt like freedom.

I had mistaken one form of control for the absence of control.

Dad closed the document.

“Who was the notary?”

Rachel zoomed in.

“Megan Cross.”

I knew the name.

Megan handled guest contracts and wine-club events for Eleanor.

“She works for them.”

“That does not automatically make the notarization fraudulent,” Rachel said. “But if Claire was in Seattle, someone has a serious problem.”

My phone started vibrating.

Adrian.

I declined it.

He called again.

Dad looked at me but said nothing.

That mattered too.

I answered.

“What?”

Adrian sounded calmer now.

“Claire, come back. We can talk.”

“You hit me with a plate.”

“I lost my temper.”

“You tried to steal two point four million dollars against my apartment.”

Silence.

Then: “You don’t understand the structure.”

I almost smiled.

Every fraudster eventually finds a sophisticated word for theft.

“Explain it.”

“It was temporary collateral.”

“Using a forged signature?”

“I didn’t forge anything.”

“Did Eleanor?”

Another pause.

“I’m not discussing Mom.”

There.

A tiny answer.

Adrian was not shocked by the allegation.

He was protecting her.

“What happens if Westbridge rejects the apartment?” I asked.

His breathing changed.

“Claire.”

“What happens?”

“Nothing you need to worry about.”

“That means something terrible.”

“Just come home.”

Home.

The word made my stomach turn.

Rachel motioned for me to keep him talking.

I pushed.

“Is Bennett Ridge insolvent?”

Adrian hung up.

Dad looked toward Rachel.

She was already opening another file.

“I pulled the public liens while Claire was being treated,” she said. “Bennett Reserve Holdings has three recorded obligations. Two were extended. One comes due Friday.”

“How large?” Dad asked.

“Eight point six million.”

I stared at her.

Friday was forty-eight hours away.

The apartment was not the prize.

It was the patch.

Whatever the Bennetts had done, they needed my property badly enough to forge documents, stage an ambush, and smash a plate against my head when I refused.

Dad’s phone rang.

He answered, listened, then looked at me.

“That was Westbridge’s outside counsel.”

My heartbeat accelerated.

“They want to know why Bennett Reserve submitted a second transfer package tonight.”

Rachel leaned closer. “Second?”

Dad nodded.

“The first one was the forged lien.”

He looked down at the copy of the papers from dinner.

“The document they tried to make you sign tonight would have replaced it.”

Exactly as Rachel feared.

May you like

And according to Westbridge, the Bennett family had represented that I was signing voluntarily.

📖 Eleanor’s false witness signature exposed the first layer, but the eight-million-dollar deadline explained why all three Bennetts were desperate enough to force me. 👇
