Chapter 11 - The Woman Margaret Said Was Dead

I couldn't speak.

Laura Bennett stood beneath the dead chandelier holding the hospital bracelet from the day I was born.

Margaret looked terrified.

Not angry.

Terrified.

"You're lying," I said.

Laura nodded as if she'd expected that.

"I would think the same thing."

"Where did you get that?"

"St. Catherine's."

The clinic.

My stomach turned.

Margaret said, "Get out."

Laura didn't look at her.

She looked at me.

"I've been trying to find you for eleven years."

"Why now?"

"Because Henry is dead."

My father.

The man who raised me.

"He's been dead eleven years."

"I know."

"Then why wait?"

"Because Peter Lawson found me first."

Silence.

Margaret whispered, "Of course."

I turned.

"You know her."

Margaret didn't answer.

Laura did.

"We met once."

"When?"

"The day Margaret took you."

My chest tightened.

Rachel stepped out of the office.

"Mom?"

Laura looked at her.

"You must be Rachel."

Rachel stopped.

Margaret said, "Don't talk to her."

Rachel laughed bitterly.

"That command stopped working tonight."

Laura held the bracelet toward me.

I didn't take it.

"Why did they take me?"

"They said I couldn't keep you."

"Who said?"

"Dr. Trent."

The same doctor who handled Sophie's secret adoption.

"And Henry?"

Laura's face changed.

"He paid my medical bills."

I felt sick.

"Did he buy me?"

"No."

The answer came immediately.

"He thought he was helping."

Margaret scoffed.

Laura turned.

"You told him I abandoned her."

Margaret looked away.

Laura continued.

"You told me the baby died."

The room went silent.

I stared at Margaret.

"What?"

Laura's hands began shaking.

"I woke up after complications. Dr. Trent told me my daughter didn't survive."

My throat closed.

"But you did."

She looked at me.

"I found out years later."

"How?"

"A nurse contacted me before St. Catherine's closed."

Margaret whispered, "Which nurse?"

Laura looked at her.

"Elaine Morris."

Margaret's face changed.

She knew the name.

"Elaine stole records."

"Elaine saved them."

Laura reached into her coat.

A flash drive.

"Birth logs. Transfer notes. Payment ledgers."

I stared at it.

"Why didn't you come sooner?"

"I tried."

She looked ashamed.

"Peter threatened me."

"With what?"

"My other children."

The words hit strangely.

I had siblings.

Biological ones.

Somewhere.

Laura continued.

"He said the transfer had been legal, that disturbing your life would expose me to criminal charges because my signatures were on the surrender forms."

"Did you sign them?"

"No."

Another forged signature.

Of course.

Everything in this family seemed built on paper someone else had signed.

Rachel whispered, "What does this have to do with Sophie?"

Laura looked at her.

"I didn't know until three weeks ago."

"What happened three weeks ago?"

"Elaine's daughter contacted me."

She had found more clinic archives.

Among them was a transfer file from eight years earlier.

Sophia Parker.

Rachel closed her eyes.

Laura continued.

"Same doctor identification."

"Trent was retired by then," I said.

"His medical seal wasn't."

My skin prickled.

"Who used it?"

Laura looked toward Margaret.

Margaret snapped, "Don't."

Laura ignored her.

"Peter Lawson."

Rachel swore.

I thought of Daniel's words.

Peter is not your lawyer.

"Why would Peter repeat the same scheme with Sophie?"

Laura looked at me.

"Because he didn't create it."

"What?"

"Henry did."

My body went cold.

"No."

"Not the forged papers."

She clarified quickly.

"The family succession structure."

Margaret sat down.

Laura continued.

"Henry learned what happened to you before he died."

My eyes burned.

"He knew I wasn't his biological daughter?"

"Yes."

"Did he know you were alive?"

"Yes."

I stepped backward.

Another person who had known.

Another person who kept quiet.

"Why didn't he tell me?"

"Because he was trying to undo what Margaret and Trent had done without destroying you."

Margaret laughed sharply.

"Henry loved secrets more than any of us."

Laura's gaze hardened.

"He rewrote the trust because he knew you had stolen Emily."

Margaret stood.

"I raised her."

"You stole her."

"I gave her a family."

"You told me she was dead."

The two women stared at each other.

Thirty-four years of hatred filled the space between them.

Sophie stepped out from behind Rachel.

"Did Grandma steal me too?"

Laura looked at her.

Her face softened.

"No, sweetheart."

Margaret said nothing.

Sophie looked at Rachel.

Then me.

"Did Aunt Rachel give me away?"

Rachel began crying.

"Yes."

Sophie nodded slowly.

It was too much for an eight-year-old.

I pulled her against me.

"We're going home."

Laura said, "You can't."

I turned.

"Why?"

"Because the emergency trust meeting was moved."

My pulse jumped.

"To when?"

"Tonight."

"What?"

She looked at the flash drive.

"Peter called it after he learned the DNA results were released."

Rachel stared at her.

"How do you know?"

"Because he sent me the notice."

"Why would Peter send you anything?"

Laura looked directly at me.

"Because Henry named me in the original trust."

Margaret went completely still.

I felt Sophie gripping my hand.

"Named you as what?"

Laura swallowed.

"The person who takes control if Margaret's authority is challenged before Emily learns the truth."

My heart slammed.

"What truth?"

Laura looked at the DNA report.

"That Emily Parker was never Henry Parker's biological daughter."

Margaret's mouth tightened.

Laura continued.

"But Henry wrote the trust so biology wouldn't matter."

I stared at her.

"Then why does Sophie's biology matter?"

Laura's answer came quietly.
