Chapter 7 - What My Father Left Behind

Rebecca still had one box of Dad's belongings.

Mom had given it to her when she sold our childhood home.

Inside were old tax records, military papers, medical receipts and a sealed folder Rebecca had never thrown away.

She photographed the pages for me.

Dad hadn't died from an ordinary heart attack.

The records described a suspected inherited cardiac rhythm disorder.

Genetic testing had been recommended for his children.

Rebecca remembered Mom refusing.

“She said it would follow us forever.”

Insurance.

Employment.

Fear.

Shame.

My mother had buried the information.

Twenty-seven years later, Emma developed symptoms consistent with the same family history.

And Mom had recognized them before I did.

That explained her obsession.

It didn't explain the porch.

Then Rebecca sent one final photograph.

It was a handwritten note from our father.

Diana—

If Daniel ever shows symptoms, don't let fear make this decision for you again.

Again.

I stared at that word.

There had been another decision.

Something before Dad died.

Something my mother had spent nearly three decades hiding.

And somehow Emma had brought it back.
