Chapter 11 - Dawson File C-9

C-9 was not in Margaret’s foundation archive.

Richard had deposited it with the trust company.

Margaret never had physical access.

That explained why she hadn’t burned it.

Charles opened the sealed folder while Daniel, Rebecca, Vanessa, my mother and I watched.

The first document was Richard’s 1997 denial letter.

Same wording.

Same signature.

Claire Dawson is not my daughter.

Then came the page Richard expected Margaret never to show anyone.

A handwritten note.

I wrote the denial at Margaret’s insistence before independent testing could be completed.

My heart hammered.

The next page was a laboratory order.

Richard had requested paternity testing.

Sample A: Richard.

Sample B: infant Claire Dawson.

Result:

Probability of paternity 99.96%.

My mother covered her face.

Richard knew.

The report was dated eleven days after his denial letter.

“He lied first,” I whispered.

Rebecca nodded.

“Then corrected privately.”

I wasn’t ready to forgive a dead man for that.

The next document explained why.

Margaret threatened to expose Thomas’s pregnancy with her if Richard acknowledged Claire publicly.

Daniel stared at the page.

“She blackmailed Dad.”

Vanessa read over his shoulder.

“If Richard admitted Claire was his child from an affair, Margaret would reveal that she was pregnant by Thomas.”

Two affairs.

Two pregnancies.

Each spouse holding the other’s secret.

The Bennett marriage had not survived through loyalty.

It had survived through mutually assured destruction.

Richard wrote:

We agreed publicly to preserve the marriage and company. I now believe that agreement harmed both children.

Both.

Me.

Daniel.

He had eventually seen us as children trapped beneath adult cowardice.

Another document showed Richard quietly created educational accounts for both of us.

Daniel’s was known.

Mine had been routed through Robert Dawson.

I remembered my father saying a distant construction-union benefit paid part of my college tuition.

It hadn’t.

Richard had.

My mother whispered, “Robert knew?”

“Yes.”

She started crying again.

The man I called Dad knew I was not biologically his.

He raised me anyway.

That did not make him less my father.

If anything, it made Margaret’s obsession with blood look even uglier.

Then C-9 turned darker.

A private investigator’s memorandum.

Commissioned by Richard.

Twenty-six years earlier.

Subject:

Margaret Bennett—unauthorized genetic testing.

Richard suspected Margaret had taken samples from Daniel and me.

Both children.

Without consent.

Why?

The investigator’s notes said Margaret feared Thomas’s estate could reopen if Daniel tested as his child.

She also feared Richard might eventually acknowledge me.

Two hidden children.

Two branches.

One woman determined to make sure neither changed the financial structure.

Then came a lab invoice.

Heritage Kinship predecessor.

Account:

Margaret Bennett.

Samples:

Child B-17.

Child C-9.

That was where the old genetic profiles came from.

Margaret had obtained my DNA too.

I felt physically sick.

“She had our samples when we were children.”

Daniel whispered, “That’s what she reused for Lily.”

Rebecca nodded slowly.

“The fake Lily profile came from one of these archived children.”

Andrea had said the fake child profile was twenty-six years old.

Now we knew the likely source.

Mine.

If Margaret used my childhood sample as “Lily,” it would naturally fail paternity against Daniel while still appearing genetically Bennett-related on broader review.

Perfect camouflage.

I called NorthStar.

Andrea compared the archived fake Lily profile against my current verified sample.

Result:

Match.

The DNA Margaret used to prove Lily wasn’t Daniel’s had been mine.

My childhood genetic material.

Stored for twenty-six years.

Relabeled as my daughter.

Daniel looked horrified.

“She used you to erase Lily.”

“Yes.”

The cruelty was almost poetic.

Margaret had spent decades trying to erase me from the Bennett family.

Then she used my own DNA to try to erase my daughter.

C-9 contained one final page.

Richard’s instruction.

If Margaret ever uses either childhood profile again, assume the Thomas branch documents are compromised and locate Helena Ward.

I looked at Charles.

“Who is Helena Ward?”

He didn’t know.

Vanessa did.

Her face changed.

“She was Grandma Bennett’s private nurse.”

“Is she alive?”

“I think so.”

“Why would Richard want us to find her?”

Vanessa whispered, “Because she was there when Thomas died.”

The room went silent.

Thomas’s death had always been treated as a highway accident.

A tragedy.

An endpoint.

Richard’s instructions suggested it was also the beginning of the cover-up.
