Chapter 13 - THE BROTHERS OPENED RICHARD’S BOX
Two years after the DNA test, Mark and Daniel opened the final storage box from Richard’s office.
They had avoided it.
Not because they expected a twist.
Because grief has timing.
Most documents were boring.
Insurance.
Old contracts.
Tax records.
Receipts.
Then they found two watches.
One engraved for Mark.
One for Daniel.
Different inscriptions.
Mark’s:
Build something worth leaving.
Daniel’s:
Choose who you become.
Daniel sat with the watch in his palm for a long time.
No mention of blood.
No secret confession.
No punishment.
Richard apparently understood that Daniel might someday learn.
Maybe that was why he wrote what he did.
They also found a copy of the trust amendment including Lily.
Richard had signed it while undergoing cancer treatment.
His hands were shaky.
The attorney’s notes said:
Client specifically confirms Daniel’s children included regardless of genetic relationship.
Daniel laughed through tears.
“He really thought Mom might do this.”
Mark shook his head.
“Maybe he knew her better than we did.”
They closed the box.
No new mystery emerged.
That was important.
