Chapter 9 - MARGARET’S FIRST APOLOGY

Her first apology was terrible.

Emma,

I’m sorry things became physical.

I stopped reading.

No.

Ryan agreed.

He returned letter through attorney with no response.

Second:

I’m sorry I kicked you.

Better.

Then:

But you humiliated me.

Ruined.

Third letter months later.

I kicked you because I was furious that Ryan was choosing you over me.

There.

Truth.

No but.

Then:

I knew you were pregnant. I did it anyway.

That sentence mattered.

Then:

I used Noah’s future as another reason to fight you instead of a reason to stop.

I cried.

Not because forgiven.

Because accuracy.

Then:

I forged and concealed documents because I believed protecting family assets justified controlling family members.

Finally.

Then:

It didn’t.

Ryan read.

Said:

“She wrote family assets before people.”

“Yes.”

Old habit.

Still learning.

Then Margaret asked for therapy-mediated meeting with Ryan only.

He went.

I didn’t.

His choice.

He came home shaken.

“She admitted Claire.”

“What?”

“She admitted telling me Claire died because she thought I’d follow Claire out.”

There.

Fear of abandonment.

She sacrificed siblings to keep one son.

Then:

“She said Dad threatened divorce over it.”

Thomas knew?

Apparently yes.

He discovered lie later.

Tried to reconnect Ryan and Claire.

Margaret intercepted.

Then Thomas died before resolving.

Ryan cried.

“My father knew my sister was alive.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t he come get me?”

“You were an adult.”

That hurt.

Thomas may have believed Ryan would eventually see.

He underestimated control.

Again.

Then Ryan said:

“I told Mom she doesn’t meet Noah.”

“For how long?”

“I didn’t give timeline.”

Good.

“Did she argue?”

“Yes.”

Of course.

“What did you do?”

“Left.”

I smiled.

That was growth.

Then Margaret sent one message:

I hate this boundary.

Followed by:

I will respect it.

Even better.

You don’t need to like boundaries.

You need to obey them.

Then legal matters settled partly.

Margaret retained substantial assets.

Ryan and Claire gained control rights and trust information.

Villa prepared for sale.

Insurance increase canceled.

Forgery matters handled separately.

Margaret faced consequences.

No one became instantly poor.

No palace transfer to me.

Real.

Then buyer toured villa.

I refused to go.

Ryan did.

He came back carrying metal basin.

I stared.

“Why?”

“I thought we should throw it away.”

I almost said yes.

Then:

“No.”

“What?”

“Donate it.”

He laughed.

“Who wants this?”

Animal shelter.

Large basin useful for washing dogs.

We donated.

The object Margaret used to humiliate me became boring utility somewhere else.

That felt better than smashing it.
