Chapter 12 - Carolyn Comes Back

Carolyn Bennett was not missing.
She had been hiding.
That difference mattered.
Vanessa had an old email address for her.
No response.
Daniel searched the family trust records and found a mailing address in Virginia that had gone inactive years earlier.
Rebecca told us not to chase ghosts.
Then Carolyn contacted me herself.
Not by phone.
By email.
Subject:
I saw what Margaret did to Lily.
My hands shook as I opened it.
Claire,
Do not assume I was helping her.
I came back because Peter told me Margaret was using DNA against another child.
I did not know that child was Lily until yesterday.
I called Rebecca immediately.
Carolyn agreed to a video conversation with counsel present.
When her face appeared on-screen, I saw pieces of the Bennett family immediately.
Richard’s eyes.
Vanessa’s mouth.
She was fifty-two now.
Tired.
Careful.
“Where is Emma?”
That was my first question.
“Safe.”
“Does Margaret know?”
“No.”
“Why were you in the backyard?”
“Peter asked me to come.”
“What did he say?”
“That Margaret had reopened B-17.”
Peter again.
The accountant who had helped both sides for years.
I didn’t trust him.
Carolyn understood.
“You shouldn’t trust him.”
“Then why did you?”
“I didn’t. I trusted the documents he sent.”
“What happened at Margaret’s house?”
Carolyn looked away.
“I confronted her.”
“Before Lily arrived?”
“Yes.”
“Was Lily already there?”
“She was inside.”
“With who?”
“Margaret’s housekeeper.”
I hadn’t known that.
Margaret had invited Lily over for lunch while Daniel was at work.
I believed it was a grandmother trying to repair damage after weeks of tension.
That decision would haunt me.
Carolyn continued.
“I showed Margaret the independent test Richard ordered sixteen years ago.”
“Why?”
“I wanted her to know I still had it.”
“What did she do?”
“She laughed.”
“About what?”
“She said none of it mattered once Lily was disqualified.”
My stomach tightened.
“She knew Lily’s legal result hadn’t arrived.”
“She believed another report would replace it.”
“What report?”
Carolyn shook her head.
“I don’t know.”
Then she said Margaret received a call.
Afterward, her mood changed completely.
“She said, ‘The lab won’t cooperate.’”
Northstar had probably rejected the cancellation request.
Except the timing was wrong.
The cancellation attempt happened after I took Lily home.
Unless Margaret had made an earlier call we didn’t know about.
Carolyn continued.
“Lily came outside.”
“What happened?”
“Margaret started asking her questions about Daniel.”
“What questions?”
“Whether Daniel helped her brush her teeth.”
I frowned.
“Why?”
Carolyn’s expression tightened.
“DNA.”
Toothbrush.
Saliva.
Another home sample.
“She was trying to figure out where to get Lily’s DNA?”
“Or whether Daniel’s was on something Lily used.”
My skin crawled.
“What happened near the pit?”
“Margaret told Lily there was a prize at the bottom.”
My hands curled.
“Did Lily go in?”
“No.”
“She refused?”
“Yes.”
“What happened next?”
Carolyn looked directly into the camera.
“I left.”
I stared.
“You left?”
“I told Margaret if she touched that child, I would go straight to Richard’s attorney.”
“But you left Lily there.”
Shame crossed Carolyn’s face.
“Yes.”
I was furious.
“You knew what Margaret did to Emma.”
“Yes.”
“And you left my daughter alone with her.”
“I thought threatening her would stop her.”
“How did that work sixteen years ago?”
Carolyn flinched.
Good.
I was tired of people expecting fear to erase responsibility.
“What happened after you left?”
“I don’t know.”
“What about the missing camera minute?”
“I didn’t delete it.”
“Could Margaret?”
“Yes.”
“Could you?”
“No.”
“Could Peter?”
She hesitated.
“Peter maintained Richard’s security accounts years ago.”
Another link.
Peter had access everywhere.
Trust finances.
DNA payments.
Security systems.
Maybe he had been helping Margaret.
Maybe helping Richard.
Maybe himself.
Carolyn explained why she returned now.
Emma was turning seventeen.
Richard’s old confidentiality agreement expired when she turned sixteen, but Carolyn remained silent because Emma wanted no contact.
Then Peter sent proof that Margaret was targeting Lily.
“I couldn’t watch her do it again.”
“You almost did.”
Carolyn accepted that.
“Yes.”
No excuse.
That made me trust her slightly more.
Then she gave us something important.
A copy of Emma’s independent DNA report.
Full name revealed.
Emma Caroline Bennett.
Biological father:
Daniel James Bennett.
Richard’s younger brother.
Probability greater than 99.99%.
Emma was unquestionably a Bennett descendant.
If alive and legally eligible, she belonged in the trust review.
“Will Emma provide a new verified sample?”
Carolyn went silent.
“That has to be her choice.”
“She’s sixteen.”
“Almost seventeen.”
“And Margaret is moving assets now.”
“I know.”
“Then help us.”
Carolyn’s eyes filled.
“I will ask her.”
The conversation ended.
Ten minutes later, Vanessa called.
She had recovered another backup camera clip from Margaret’s house.
Not the missing sixty-three seconds.
Something earlier.
Margaret alone at the patio table.
A man walked into frame.
Peter Lang.
He handed her a small padded envelope.
Margaret opened it.
Inside were two cheek-swab tubes.
Then Peter pointed toward the pit.
Margaret shook her head.
They argued.
No sound.
Finally Peter grabbed the envelope back.
He left.
Margaret watched him go.
Three minutes later, Carolyn arrived.
Peter had been at the house before Carolyn.
And he had brought DNA collection swabs.
Then my phone rang.
Peter.
I answered.
His voice was frantic.
“Claire, Margaret knows you found the camera backup.”
“How?”
“She still has access to the cloud account.”
“What were you doing at her house?”
“Trying to stop her.”
“With DNA swabs?”
“She wanted me to get a sample from Lily.”
“Why?”
“To make another test.”
“She already had an old fake sample.”
“That wasn’t enough anymore.”
“What changed?”
He went silent.
“Peter.”
“The trust company changed its verification protocol after Richard died.”
“So?”
“Old samples won’t qualify.”
“Then she needed Lily’s real DNA.”
“Yes.”
“To prove she wasn’t Daniel’s daughter?”
“No.”
My heartbeat changed.
“Then what was she testing?”
Peter whispered, “She wanted to compare Lily to someone else.”
“Who?”
He inhaled.
Then said a name I never expected.
“Emma.”
Margaret had not only been trying to disqualify Lily.
She wanted to know whether Lily and Emma were related through the same Bennett line.
