Chapter 6 - HER COUNTERATTACK

Margaret released a statement through an attorney before I left the hospital.

She did not mention the audit.

She mentioned me.

According to Margaret, I had become “emotionally unstable during late pregnancy,” accused relatives of stealing money, and “lost my footing during a heated confrontation.”

The sentence about the fall was carefully written.

Not I didn’t push her.

Not Claire slipped.

Lost my footing.

A phrase designed to sound innocent without committing to details.

Then came the cruel part.

Margaret said Ethan had “long expressed concerns about Claire’s escalating hostility toward his family.”

Rachel read it from my hospital chair.

“I want to hit her.”

“Get in line.”

Ethan called eleven times.

I answered once.

“Did you tell her I was unstable?”

“No.”

“Did you tell anyone I was hostile?”

Silence.

My chest tightened.

“What did you say?”

“Claire…”

“Say it.”

“I told my mother we were fighting about the trust.”

“That’s not what I asked.”

He exhaled.

“I told her you were emotional about money and the baby.”

I closed my eyes.

“When?”

“Two weeks ago.”

“Anything else?”

“She asked if you were sleeping.”

“And?”

“I said not much.”

I laughed, but there was no humor in it.

“I was thirty-eight weeks pregnant.”

“I know.”

“No, Ethan. You keep saying that after the fact.”

He went quiet.

Margaret had taken ordinary pregnancy stress and turned it into groundwork.

The same way she took Ethan’s desire to avoid scandal and turned it into permission.

Sarah advised me not to respond publicly.

Detective Shaw agreed.

“Let her lock herself into a version,” she said.

That became our strategy.

Facts first.

Noise later.

Before discharge, the hospital social worker documented my injuries and confirmed there was no indication I had intentionally caused my fall. Again, that did not prove Margaret pushed me. It established what could responsibly be established.

Sophie and I moved into Rachel’s guest suite in Cambridge.

Ethan offered to leave the mansion and give me the house.

I declined.

“I’m not taking Sophie back there yet.”

He nodded.

No argument.

That was another small change.

Then the next cost arrived.

Bennett Medical Holdings announced Ethan would step down temporarily from the family foundation board while the trust review proceeded.

He called me immediately.

“I’m cooperating.”

“You should.”

“I know.”

For once, he did not ask me to comfort him.

That mattered too.

That evening, Rachel brought me my hospital bag.

Inside was one of the baby sleepers from the staircase.

White cotton with tiny blue stars.

A faint mark from the foyer floor ran across one sleeve.

I held it longer than I meant to.

Then my phone rang.

Detective Shaw.

A member of the mansion staff had contacted her.

Housekeeper Elena Torres had heard Margaret speaking to someone ten minutes before the shove.

And Margaret had said my name.

📖 Margaret tried to paint me as unstable, but the first household witness heard enough before the fall to prove the confrontation had been planned long before I reached the stairs. 👇
