Chapter 7 - Michael Had Been Cheated Too

Frank Bennett created a trust for Michael when he was born.
Grandparents funded it.
By the time Michael was nine, it held roughly $900,000.
Frank served as trustee.
During Harbor Point, Frank invested $600,000 of that child trust into the project.
Was that allowed?
Maybe under the old trust terms.
Was it wise?
Clearly not.
Then the money disappeared with the rest.
Michael never knew.
After Harbor Point collapsed, Frank replenished some of the trust using the Riverside buyout.
But not all.
Shortfall at Frank’s death:
Approximately $430,000.
Adjusted for decades of growth?
Millions.
Who managed Michael’s trust after Frank died?
Gregory Vale.
Of course.
Gregory told Hattie the trust had been fully depleted by Frank’s bad investments.
He never disclosed the Harbor Point escrow problem.
Never told them Leonard Vale may have stolen part.
Michael believed his father squandered everything.
Hattie believed Raymond profited.
Gregory stood between both stories.
Then Rachel traced later payments.
Gregory’s firm quietly made annual “family advisory contributions” to Michael’s education expenses.
Why?
Maybe guilt.
Maybe to prevent questions.
Then one larger transfer after Michael turned twenty-five:
$350,000.
Source:
Vale Family Settlement Account.
Description:
Legacy trust resolution.
Michael remembered receiving it.
Gregory told him it was a final distribution from Frank.
It wasn’t.
It came from Vale money.
A secret partial repayment.
Meaning Gregory knew the Vale family owed Michael something.
Michael came to the hotel through counsel that afternoon.
I almost refused.
Donna said:
“Let him explain.”
So I did.
He sat across from me.
No touching.
No apologies first.
I wanted facts.
“Did you marry me because of Riverside?”
His face changed.
“No.”
“Did you know our fathers were partners?”
“Not when we met.”
“When did you learn?”
“After our engagement.”
I stared.
“And you said nothing.”
“Gregory told me it was ugly history that would upset you.”
“You listened.”
“Yes.”
“Did Hattie know?”
“Some.”
“What did she tell you?”
“That Raymond cheated Dad.”
“Did you believe her?”
“At first.”
“Then?”
“Gregory told me there wasn’t enough proof.”
“So why keep it from me?”
Michael looked ashamed.
“Because I thought if you knew Mom hated your father, you’d leave.”
Maybe true.
Cowardly.
Then I asked:
“When did you start using Riverside in loan documents?”
“Last year.”
“Did you know my signature was forged?”
“Yes.”
Direct.
Good.
“Why?”
“I needed the Jersey loan.”
“Why not tell me?”
“You would have refused.”
“Yes.”
“I know.”
“Did you support the plan to make Donna look incompetent?”
He hesitated.
“Yes.”
My mother looked away.
“Did you know Hattie would chain her?”
“No.”
“Did you know she wanted to provoke me?”
“Yes.”
“Did you know Gregory wanted physical contact?”
“Yes.”
“Then why did you slap me?”
His face crumpled.
“Because I saw the chain around Mom and lost control.”
“You saw my mother’s neck too.”
Silence.
“That’s the part you don’t get to explain away.”
“I know.”
At least he stopped trying.
Then Michael handed Rachel an email.
Gregory sent it four days earlier.
Subject:
RIVERSIDE SOLUTION.
If Donna signs protective administration, we can refinance Riverside without litigating Frank’s old interest.
Michael replied:
What if the side letter is valid?
Gregory:
Then we settle later.
Michael:
How much?
Gregory:
Hattie gets enough.
Not twenty-five percent.
“Enough.”
Gregory intended to use Hattie’s real claim while paying her less.
Then Michael said:
“There’s another document Gregory keeps in his private safe.”
“What?”
“Harbor Point closing ledger.”
“How do you know?”
“I saw it once.”
“Why didn’t you copy it?”
“He caught me.”
Then:
“It has my father’s signature.”
“What does it say?”
Michael swallowed.
“That Frank authorized the final Harbor Point transfer.”
If true, maybe Leonard didn’t steal.
Maybe Frank knowingly moved money.
The old story could shift again.
Then Michael added:
“But the signature looked wrong.”
Could be wishful.
Could be fraud.
We needed the ledger.
Then Rachel received an alert.
Gregory Vale had filed a civil action.
Against Donna.
Against me.
And against Michael.
He asked the court to determine Riverside ownership because “newly discovered partnership evidence” suggested Frank Bennett’s estate still held forty percent.
Gregory had escalated from secret manipulation to open litigation.
Why?
Because the missing box had given him something he believed could survive scrutiny.
And attached to his filing was the exact Harbor Point ledger Michael had just described.
