Chapter 10 - THE THIRD ELLIS DAUGHTER

My mother admitted there had been triplets.
Nora.
Claire.
Grace.
Grace was declared stillborn and transferred to the Pembroke program.
Thomas raised her as an identity specialist. She learned our voices, signatures, and histories.
Grace removed Ethan from care.
She believed she was rescuing him from federal authorities and returning him to the only family structure he understood.
Thomas had trained her to confuse obedience with safety.
Federal agents traced the vehicle to the old airfield.
Grace stood beside a private jet holding Ethan’s hand.
Michael Pembroke waited near the stairs.
Thomas remained inside the aircraft.
I spoke through a secure loudspeaker.
“Grace, Ethan did not choose this.”
“He’s a child.”
“He still gets a voice.”
Thomas shouted that federal care had poisoned the boy against family.
Ethan looked up at Grace.
“I want to stay.”
She assumed he meant with her.
He continued.
“I want to stay where nobody lies about my mom.”
Grace’s grip loosened.
Michael moved toward him.
She stepped between them.
The first crack in her conditioning appeared.
Federal agents advanced.
Thomas ordered the pilot to start the engines.
Grace pulled Ethan away from the plane.
Michael reached beneath his jacket.
A sniper laser appeared on his chest.
He froze.
No one fired.
Ethan ran toward the agents.
Grace surrendered.
Michael escaped beneath the hangar through another tunnel.
The aircraft was seized.
Thomas was not aboard.
A recorded projection had created his image inside the cabin.
He remained elsewhere.
Grace entered federal custody.
She did not ask to be called sister.
She confessed to identity fraud, abduction, and surveillance. She also delivered Thomas’s communications server.
The server showed he had manipulated all three of us differently.
I received public legitimacy.
Claire received secret training.
Grace received no original identity at all.
Competition kept us divided.
We refused it.
Not through instant love.
Through shared legal counsel, transparent evidence, and separate boundaries.
Then Ethan asked to meet me again.
He held June for the first time under supervision.
She grabbed one of his fingers.
He looked frightened.
“She knows me?”
“No.”
“Then why is she holding on?”
“Babies hold what reaches them.”
He thought about that.
Then said, “Grandfather says holding means ownership.”
“No.”
I loosened June’s fingers gently.
“Holding means contact. She can let go.”
The distinction mattered.
Then Sarah went into premature labor.
During delivery, the hospital lost power.
A backup generator failed.

Someone had entered the medical system using General Bennett’s credentials.
The Pembroke network had reached military protection.
