Chapter 7 - THE WOMAN CARRYING MY CHILD

The carrier was Sarah Collins.

Michael Pembroke’s missing wife.

She had been held for years inside Pembroke Behavioral Health under a false name. At forty-one, she was implanted with an embryo created from my egg and Thomas Pembroke’s stored sample.

The genetic relationship was horrifying.

Thomas was my father’s first cousin.

The family had selected him to keep the Ellis land rights inside a related bloodline.

Sarah escaped the facility three weeks before the party with help from a nurse.

She contacted my mother.

That was how Evelyn knew the custody petition had accelerated.

Sarah remained hidden because Margaret threatened to destroy her first daughter’s adoption records.

Federal agents found her at a church shelter.

Seven months pregnant.

Terrified that everyone wanted the baby.

I did not claim motherhood.

The embryo came from my stolen egg, but Sarah carried the child and had endured the pregnancy.

She needed independent counsel and medical care before any decision.

Margaret’s attorneys filed immediately, claiming the fetus belonged to the Pembroke trust under an old reproductive agreement.

The agreement carried Sarah’s signature.

Video showed her sedated while Michael guided her hand.

A real signature.

No consent.

Rachel challenged the contract in federal court.

The hearing became the first public examination of the Pembroke system.

Margaret appeared in cream silk, calm as ever.

She described herself as a grandmother protecting vulnerable children from unstable women.

Then my party video played.

The bell jingled.

Guests laughed.

Margaret held the engraved collar toward June.

The courtroom changed.

Humiliation that had seemed private became evidence of intent.

Sarah testified remotely.

Anna testified from protected care.

My mother testified about the trust.

Walter testified about the archive and admitted his own role.

Wesley requested a deal.

He offered Thomas’s tunnel maps and Michael’s safe houses.

Prosecutors accepted cooperation, not immunity.

Margaret watched her son turn against her.

For the first time, her composure cracked.

Then her attorney introduced a document from my military record.

A signed authorization giving Margaret emergency custody over any biological child created during my service.

My signature appeared genuine.

The date came from the hospital where Ethan was born.

I remembered signing a stack of surgical forms while heavily medicated.

The court ordered forensic review.

Until then, June remained with me under military protection.

Ethan remained in therapeutic placement.

Sarah retained control of her pregnancy.

Margaret retained one weapon.

Doubt.

Then Dr. Caroline Reed surrendered.

She carried the original surgery video.

Before entering custody, she said, “Nora signed something that night.”

A pause.

“But it wasn’t the custody agreement.”
