Chapter 11 - THE DELIVERY

Dr. Sarah Jenkins delivered the baby by emergency surgery under portable lights.
A girl.
Small but breathing.
Sarah named her Hope Collins.
She remained Hope’s legal mother.
I was recorded as a biological contributor whose genetic material had been stolen.
Walter was listed as the biological father after independent testing contradicted the Vale records.
Thomas’s sample had been substituted with Walter’s.
Margaret had designed the child as a healthy donor for Derek’s inherited immune condition.
Again, one child existed to serve another.
Hope entered neonatal care with no Pembroke access.
The power failure came from Michael, who had entered the hospital disguised as maintenance staff. He attempted to remove stored cord blood and Hope’s medical records.
Security captured him.
Michael claimed he wanted to save Derek.
The cord blood could treat his brother.
Dr. Jenkins explained that donation might be possible safely later, with proper consent and oversight.
Michael stared at her.
“Then why did Mother say we had to take it?”
“Because asking would mean accepting no.”
That sentence broke through something.
Michael surrendered the remaining access codes.
He accepted charges and agreed to testify.
Derek’s illness was real.
Margaret’s methods were not necessary.
She chose control because uncertainty offended her.
Thomas’s location appeared in the hospital server logs.
He had accessed the power system from the Pembroke estate.
Federal agents returned.
The mansion was empty.
In the sunroom, black collars had been arranged on every chair.
One for Margaret.
One for Walter.
One for Wesley.
One for Michael.
One for Nora.
One for Claire.
One for Grace.
One for Ethan.
One for June.
One for Hope.
At the center sat a final collar engraved THOMAS.
The system’s founder had marked himself.
Or someone had marked him.
The estate’s hidden tunnel led beneath the circular driveway to a private courtroom.
Thomas stood inside beside Dr. Vale and three former judges.
They were burning files.
Agents stopped the fire.
Thomas was arrested.
He called the operation legal family preservation.
Rachel called it trafficking.
He smiled.
“Words follow power.”
I answered from the doorway.
“Then your problem is that power moved.”
The federal trial would decide the rest.
Then Thomas looked at June in my arms.
“You still believe she is your daughter?”
My body tightened.
Independent DNA had confirmed she was biologically mine.
He continued.
“I didn’t question the egg.”
A pause.
“I questioned who carried her.”
My hospital delivery records showed a thirty-minute gap after June’s birth.
Another woman had been in the operating room.
Claire.
She had entered under my identity.
Thomas claimed June had been delivered by her, not me.
One baby.
May you like
Two mothers with the same DNA.
A final identity trap.
