Chapter 10 - The Nevada Trust

Hattie had prepared a transfer from Canyon Crest into a Nevada asset-protection trust.

My goal was to find the beneficiary.

Not Michael.

Not Olivia.

Not Hattie directly.

Beneficiary:

Grace Cole.

No one knew the name.

Then Olivia did.

Grace was her daughter.

Hattie’s granddaughter.

Age twenty.

College student.

Grace had no idea a trust existed.

Hattie planned to move Donna’s property into Grace’s name after obtaining it.

Why?

To put the asset beyond Samuel’s immediate reach.

Then she would sell easement rights through the trust.

Olivia looked sick.

“She was going to use my daughter.”

Another generation.

Another clean name.

Then Grace agreed to speak.

She had received strange documents from Hattie months earlier.

“Scholarship paperwork.”

She signed them.

One was a trust acceptance.

She had unknowingly become beneficiary.

Same method.

Documents disguised as something harmless.

Then Grace produced emails Hattie sent.

GRACE:

Why can’t Mom know?

HATTIE:

Because she worries too much.

Control through secrecy.

Again.

Then one attachment contained a plane reservation.

Phoenix to Reno.

Three days after Donna’s planned transfer.

Passenger:

Hattie Cole.

One way.

She planned to leave.

Samuel did not know.

Michael did not know.

Olivia did not know.

She was preparing escape.

That made her attack on Donna look even more desperate.

Then Samuel admitted he suspected she was planning something.

That was why he tightened the loan deadline.

He wanted to keep her trapped.

They were no longer partners.

They were predators circling each other.

Then Dr. Lane accepted a plea deal.

He gave prosecutors six patient files.

All six had fake incompetence evaluations.

But he insisted Hattie never asked him to physically harm anyone.

She asked for paperwork.

He provided it.

Saguaro staff then isolated residents.

Who ran Saguaro daily operations?

A woman named Karen Holt.

Michael recognized the name.

Former housekeeper.

Hattie’s friend.

Police found Karen in Tucson.

She confessed to restricting calls, withholding mail, and telling residents their families did not want them.

Evelyn Harper was among them.

Alive.

My heart stopped.

Evelyn had not disappeared permanently.

She was in a private Saguaro satellite home under another name.

Police found her that night.

Thin.

Angry.

Alive.

She recognized me.

“You took long enough.”

I nearly cried.

Then she told investigators Hattie had made her sign twice.

The first deed.

The second a statement saying she entered care voluntarily.

Evelyn refused the second.

Karen kept her isolated.

Why not move her permanently?

Because Evelyn knew something.

She had seen Hattie meet Samuel at Saguaro.

She heard them arguing about Donna’s land.

Then Evelyn repeated one line.

Samuel:

“If you run, I tell Michael what you did to Charles.”

Hattie had gone silent.

That threat had controlled her.

I thought Charles’s death was an unresolved dark family secret—but Samuel had been explicitly using it to blackmail Hattie.

May you like

**Evelyn’s testimony proved Samuel believed Hattie was responsible for Charles’s death and had used that belief to control her for years.**

*The evidence Hattie kept hidden about Charles would finally show whether Samuel’s accusation was true—or just another family weapon.*
