Chapter 14 - The Last Name on the List

Victor Ross’s email contained a spreadsheet.
My goal was to see who remained at risk.
Victim names.
Property values.
Status.
Evelyn — completed.
Marjorie — completed.
Walter — completed.
Donna — pending.
Alan — pending.
Then one final row.
Eleanor Pierce — research.
I knew the name.
Daniel Pierce’s mother.
Daniel.
My old boyfriend.
The man I once believed might be Dany’s father in another part of my life? No—different story. Here Daniel was irrelevant. I stopped and forced myself back to facts.
Eleanor Pierce was one of my firm’s former estate clients.
We had drafted a trust for her.
She owned two rental homes.
Victor had copied her file before being fired.
Hattie planned to target her next.
Why?
No family connection.
Pure opportunity.
That was important.
The scheme had expanded beyond grudges.
At some point, exploitation became business.
We contacted Eleanor immediately.
She was safe.
No documents signed.
One future victim prevented.
Then Victor admitted Hattie planned to relocate to Nevada and continue under a new company.
Grace’s trust would be the seed.
New name.
New clients.
Same method.
The Reno flight was not retirement.
It was expansion.
Then the trial reached closing arguments.
Hattie’s attorney portrayed her as a woman controlled by Samuel and desperate after years of family abuse.
Some of that was true.
Her father taught her fraud.
Samuel blackmailed her.
Charles’s death haunted her.
But victimhood did not erase victims.
The prosecution showed the leash footage.
Full length.
No edits.
Donna falling.
Hattie pulling.
Me intervening.
Michael slapping me.
Then the May 14 Evelyn video.
Same doorway.
Same control.
Then capacity letters.
Deeds.
Emails.
Nevada trust.
Cayman account.
The jury saw pattern.
Michael sat behind me.
We had not reconciled.
We had not divorced yet either.
We were waiting until criminal proceedings ended.
Not because I owed him time.
Because I wanted decisions unclouded by Hattie’s crisis.
Then the verdict.
Hattie was convicted of conspiracy, elder exploitation, identity theft, fraud, unlawful restraint, attempted property theft, and multiple financial crimes.
On charges related to Charles, the result was narrower.
Reckless endangerment and evidence concealment.
Not murder.
The evidence did not prove intent beyond reasonable doubt.
Samuel was convicted separately after his plea on financial conspiracy and coercion-related charges.
Dr. Lane lost his license and pleaded guilty to falsifying evaluations.
Karen Holt pleaded guilty to unlawful confinement and mail interference.
Victor Ross went to prison for data theft and conspiracy.
Titles began returning to victims.
Donna kept her house.
Evelyn recovered hers.
Marjorie too.
Walter’s heirs regained proceeds.
Then Canyon Crest entered receivership.
The receiver found one final sealed file in Hattie’s office.
Label:
MICHAEL — AFTER PENELOPE.
Inside was a divorce strategy.
Private investigators.
Custody language for any future child.
Financial pressure points.
Even a list of women Hattie considered “more suitable” for Michael.
She had planned his life after our marriage ended.
I thought Hattie’s obsession was protecting Michael—but the file proved she never saw him as a son with choices.
She saw him as a project.

**The final file showed Hattie intended to replace me, restructure Michael’s life, and continue controlling him even after the property scheme succeeded.**
*What Michael did with that file determined whether our marriage had any future at all.*
