Chapter 2 - THE DRIVEWAY FILE

My father did not wait for Ryan to answer.
He crouched again, checked my abdomen, and called his driver and head of security with the same cold efficiency he used in crisis meetings. Within thirty seconds, a medic was on the way, the front gates were locked, and nobody was leaving the property.
Ryan found his voice first.
“This is not what it looks like.”
My father did not even glance at him. “Then I’m sure you’ll be thrilled to explain it to the sheriff.”
Margaret descended the stairs carefully now, all outrage polished into injured dignity. “Richard, don’t be absurd. Claire was emotional. She rushed down the steps. The suitcase—”
“You shoved me,” I said.
She blinked at me. “You’re in shock.”
“And Ryan recorded it,” I said.
My husband took one step forward. “Claire, calm down.”
That word almost made me laugh.
I was nine months pregnant on a driveway with my knees torn open, money spilled around me, and my husband telling me to calm down while his mother stood over me pretending physics happened by itself.
My father finally looked at him.
“You were recording my daughter lying injured on the ground.”
Ryan swallowed. “I was documenting the incident because Claire has been unstable all morning.”
There it was.
Unstable.
The first brick in a story he was already trying to build.
My father stood. “Hand me the phone.”
“No.”
The answer came too quickly. Even Ryan seemed to hear how bad it sounded.
My father’s security chief, Owen Briggs, arrived from the Rolls-Royce and positioned himself between Ryan and the gates. Not threatening. Just final.
The medic pulled into the circular drive a minute later. While he knelt to examine me, my father kept the file in his hand and did not let it out of sight.
I watched him read the page again.
“What is it?” I asked.
His eyes moved to mine.
“Something that was locked in my private office three nights ago.”
Ryan went still.
I felt my breath catch. “What?”
“It’s part of an internal audit file. Confidential. Missing.” Dad’s gaze slid back to Ryan. “So I’ll ask you one more time. Where did you get this?”
Ryan wet his lips. “I’ve never seen that before.”
The lie was so immediate it felt practiced.
Margaret recovered enough to join in. “Richard, this is ridiculous. Perhaps Claire put those things in the suitcase herself.”
My father turned toward her fully now. “You want me to believe my pregnant daughter stole audit papers from my office and filled her own suitcase with untraceable cash before you pushed her down a staircase?”
Margaret’s expression changed at the word pushed.
Not outrage.
Calculation.
The medic told me my blood pressure was too high and I needed monitoring immediately because of the pregnancy and fall. As he helped me sit up, I saw Ryan looking not at me, not at the money, but at the file in my father’s hand.
Fear. Not concern.
Fear.
Owen and another guard began photographing the driveway before any bills or papers could be moved. My father instructed them to keep everything in place until law enforcement arrived.
Then Ryan made his first real mistake.
He said, very softly, “You shouldn’t open the rest of that.”
My father’s eyes narrowed.
Not because of the warning itself.

Because Ryan had just admitted he knew exactly what the file was.
📖 Ryan denied recognizing the stolen file, but one panicked sentence proved he knew exactly what had spilled out of my suitcase. 👇
