Chapter 8 - My Mother Had a Marriage Nobody Told Me About

His name was David Mercer.

Catherine married him at twenty-two.

The marriage lasted eleven months.

Then he disappeared.

Not metaphorically.

Left.

Closed accounts.

Moved abroad.

Catherine filed for abandonment.

Divorce granted two years later.

Then she met Dad.

Why hide it?

Dad asked Reed the same question.

“Because David wasn’t who he said he was.”

He had used a false employment history and concealed debts.

Catherine was humiliated.

Her parents pushed her to keep the entire episode private.

By the time she met Robert, she told herself the marriage had been a youthful mistake.

She never disclosed it.

Wrong.

But human.

“How does Margaret fit?”

Reed explained.

David Mercer was Margaret Brooks’s younger half-brother.

I stared.

My mother’s first husband was Aaron’s mother’s brother.

That created a relationship between our families decades before our marriage.

Not blood.

History.

Margaret knew Catherine because David talked about her.

After he disappeared, Margaret believed Catherine had taken money belonging to him.

Catherine denied it.

Then years later, Margaret saw Catherine at the hospital fundraiser.

Recognition.

Conflict reopened.

Martin—Margaret’s brother-in-law? Wait Martin is Aaron's uncle. We hadn't specified side. Let's establish Martin is Margaret's brother. That works with surname mismatch? Margaret Brooks by marriage; Martin Brooks? Same surname then maybe husband's brother. Better: Martin Brooks is late husband’s brother, Aaron’s paternal uncle. Margaret's half-brother David Mercer is maternal half-brother. Fine.

Margaret confronted Catherine.

Claimed David left behind an investment account worth almost $900,000.

Catherine said she never received it.

Martin offered to investigate.

That was how Catherine became his client.

Not random estate planning.

Old disputed money.

Then Reed said:

“Catherine found something.”

“What?”

“The account existed.”

“Who took it?”

“She didn’t know.”

Funds had been transferred after David vanished.

Beneficiary:

Margaret.

My mother-in-law.

My stomach dropped.

Margaret had accused Catherine while apparently receiving the money herself.

But did she know?

Reed wasn’t sure.

Catherine suspected Martin managed the transfer.

Then she discovered part of the money had been invested into Brooks family real estate.

The same family wealth supporting Margaret’s house.

The house she now wanted Caleb’s trust to purchase for $1.8 million.

Old money circulating back.

Then Dad asked:

“Why didn’t Catherine tell me?”

Reed sounded ashamed.

“I told her she should.”

“But?”

“She feared the issue could affect your clearance and public career.”

Dad shook his head.

“That was nonsense.”

“Probably.”

But Catherine believed any undisclosed spouse connected to financial fraud could create scrutiny.

So she chose silence.

Again:

Protection through omission.

Then Reed told us why Catherine created the descendant trust.

Not solely for grandchildren.

It was partly a firewall.

She wanted future assets isolated from any claim connected to David Mercer or the Brooks family dispute.

Martin drafted one early version.

Then Catherine became suspicious of him.

She moved the final trust to Sarah’s firm.

That explained why Martin had some old documents but no legitimate role in the final version.

The protector amendment Aaron showed us?

Sarah compared drafting styles.

Wrong font.

Wrong section numbering.

And Catherine’s signature looked authentic because Martin likely possessed real signed pages from earlier work.

A composite.

Potential forgery.

Then Dad said:

“So Martin invented himself as trust protector.”

Sarah nodded.

“Looks possible.”

If proven, Martin’s entire claim to Caleb’s trust collapsed.

Then we found Catherine’s final note to Reed.

I no longer trust Martin Brooks. Margaret knows more about David’s account than she admits. Do not let either family touch Elena’s future assets.

My throat tightened.

Mom had tried to protect me.

Then I married Margaret’s son.

Without knowing any of it.

Was that coincidence?

Aaron had already admitted Martin directed him toward me.

No.

Not fully.

Then Aaron’s message arrived.

I NEED TO TELL YOU SOMETHING BEFORE MARTIN DOES.

I replied:

THROUGH SARAH.

He agreed.

Twenty minutes later he sent a voice memo.

“Elena, Martin didn’t tell me to date you because of your money.”

Pause.

“He told me because Margaret wanted Catherine’s daughter inside the Brooks family.”

My skin crawled.

Why?

Aaron continued:

“Mom believed marriage would finally settle what Catherine took from David.”

Even after Catherine died, Margaret wanted restitution.

Through me.

Then:

“I thought it was insane.”

“So why did you approach me?”

Long silence.

“Because I owed Martin money.”

My marriage began with debt before our first date.

Aaron had accepted $75,000 from Martin to attend the event, get close to me, and report whether I knew anything about Catherine’s old records.

He said he stopped reporting after our third date.

Did he?

Maybe.

Then he said:

“I fell in love with you.”

I closed my eyes.

Some truths come too late to comfort.

Then his final line:

“Martin still has David Mercer’s original account file.”

Sarah looked up.

If that file existed, it could show who actually stole the old money.

And potentially prove Martin had spent twenty years manipulating both families with the same lie.
