Chapter 12 - Someone Used My Name at Michael’s Final Dinner
The restaurant still had archived security footage because Michael’s company had once requested it.
That fact scared me.
“Who requested it?”
Rachel asked the manager.
“Bennett Foods legal.”
“Which attorney?”
“Martin Kessler.”
Of course.
He requested footage three days after Michael died.
Then never disclosed it to me.
The restaurant’s archive retained the copy.
Timestamp:
7:02 p.m.
Michael entered.
Alive.
Dark jacket.
Phone in hand.
He looked exhausted.
Seven minutes later, a woman joined him.
Not Diane.
Not me.
Karen Bell.
James’s assistant.
I stared.
“She said Michael called her at 8:41.”
“She didn’t mention dinner,” Rachel said.
We called Karen again.
This time she cried.
“I’m sorry.”
“You had dinner with him.”
“Yes.”
“Why lie?”
“Because Martin knew.”
“What did Michael want?”
“He wanted me to bring copies.”
“Fleet records?”
“Yes. Vendor records too.”
“So you met.”
“Yes.”
“Why was the receipt under my name?”
“Michael told the waiter his wife was joining him.”
My chest tightened.
“Why?”
“He thought someone was following his corporate expenses.”
He used my name to hide Karen’s identity.
Not to frame me.
The footage continued.
Karen handed Michael an envelope.
They argued quietly.
Then she left at 8:13.
Before leaving, Michael placed his company key ring on the table while paying.
Karen accidentally picked it up with her folder.
I watched her reach the elevator.
Stop.
Realize.
Turn back.
At 8:17, she returned.
Michael had already gone to the restroom.
Another person sat briefly at his table.
Woman.
Cream blazer.
Pearls.
Diane.
My mother-in-law.
Karen approached.
Handed the keys to Diane.
Spoke.
Then left.
My skin went cold.
“Diane had Michael’s keys.”
For at least several minutes.
The footage showed Diane put them into her purse.
Michael returned.
They sat.
Talked for twenty-three minutes.
Then Diane handed him the keys.
He left.
Diane stayed behind.
I called her with Rachel present.
“Why were you at Michael’s dinner?”
Silence.
Then:
“Who told you?”
“Camera.”
She exhaled.
“He called me.”
“For what?”
“To confront me.”
“About?”
“Jonathan.”
My pulse changed.
Michael had discovered his hidden half-brother.
He accused Diane of letting Jonathan into Bennett Foods through Meridian Harvest.
She admitted it.
Why?
Because Jonathan threatened to reopen his claim publicly.
Diane feared scandal.
So she allowed him consulting access.
Then Jonathan introduced Martin to Meridian restructuring advisers.
The debt loop grew.
Michael found it.
“He told you he knew who altered Harvest Bridge?”
“Yes.”
“Who?”
“He said Peter started it.”
Peter Vaughn.
“Then?”
“Martin changed it.”
“Anyone else?”
Diane hesitated.
“He said there was another person.”
“Name.”
“He wouldn’t tell me.”
“What did you do with his keys?”
“Nothing.”
“You had them.”
“Karen gave them to me.”
“Did you leave the restaurant?”
“No.”
The camera supported that.
Diane stayed visible after Michael left.
So she could not have personally tampered with his vehicle outside the restaurant.
But someone could have copied a key.
Or used information.
No assumptions.
“Why hide the footage?”
“I didn’t.”
“Martin requested it.”
“I didn’t know.”
I believed that was possible.
Then Rachel focused on something else.
The restaurant valet log.
Michael did not arrive in BF-17.
He arrived in his personal sedan.
When he left, the valet brought BF-17.
He noticed.
Footage showed him arguing.
Valet records explained:
VEHICLE SWAP REQUESTED BY BENNETT FOODS OFFICE.
At 8:04 p.m.
While Michael was inside eating with Karen.
Request caller:
James Bennett’s executive line.
James claimed he did not call.
Karen was sitting with Michael.
So who had access?
The line could be routed through CFO administration.
Martin sometimes worked from James’s office during the crisis.
Peter Vaughn had executive-floor access.
And someone else:
Diane.
She had been given a family board access badge.
But she was physically inside the restaurant at 8:04.
Could still call.
Camera showed her arriving at 8:15.
Meaning at 8:04, her location was unknown.
My stomach tightened.
Then we retrieved phone records.
Diane called Bennett Foods at 8:03.
Duration:
38 seconds.
I stared.
“You requested the vehicle.”
She went silent.
Finally:
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Michael asked me to.”
“No. He was sitting with Karen.”
“He texted before.”
“Show me.”
She had deleted old messages.
Cloud backup recovered one.
MICHAEL:
MY CAR IS PULLING HARD AGAIN. CAN YOU HAVE THE OFFICE SEND BF-17 TO THE RESTAURANT? I’LL GET MINE TOMORROW.
My heart sank.
Michael requested the swap himself.
Diane had simply called.
That removed one suspicion.
Then raised another.
BF-17 was the vehicle with the hidden unsafe steering report.
Someone knew Michael would use it if his personal car felt wrong.
Had his personal car been made to feel wrong to force the swap?
Two vehicles.
Two concerns.
A pattern could be real.
Or coincidence.
Then Peter Vaughn finally agreed to a recorded call.
His first words:
“Michael wasn’t supposed to survive long enough to find Harvest Bridge.”
Every person in Rachel’s office stopped moving.
“Who are you talking about?”
Peter breathed hard.
“Martin.”
My skin went cold.
Then:
“But Martin wasn’t the person Michael went to meet that night.”
“Who was?”
Peter whispered:
“James.”
I looked at Michael’s brother sitting across from me.
