Chapter 15 - Caroline Starts Naming Them

Thomas Hale looked older than I remembered.
His shoulders had curved.
His hair had gone almost completely white.
But the document case in his hand was unmistakable.
I had seen my father carry it into annual trust meetings when I was younger.
Marlene saw it too.
“Thomas,” she said.
He ignored her.
Evan stepped forward.
“You should not be here.”
Thomas stopped at the bottom of the steps.
“That sentence is exactly why I am.”
David moved aside.
I opened the door.
Thomas walked past Marlene without acknowledging her.
Evan tried to follow.
Jenna blocked him.
“You can wait outside.”
“This concerns my client.”
“Which one?”
Evan stopped.
Jenna let the question hang.
Inside the home office, Thomas placed the case on the same wooden desk where I had found Caroline’s phone.
Lily stayed upstairs with the sitter.
I did not want her anywhere near what came next.
David remained near the bookshelves.
Jenna stood beside me.
Marlene and Evan were allowed inside only after Jenna made clear that nothing would be surrendered and nothing would be touched.
Marlene’s eyes never left the case.
Thomas unlocked it with the brass key from Caroline’s blue box.
Inside was an original ledger.
A sealed trust amendment.
And a handwritten letter addressed to me.
My father’s handwriting.
I reached for it.
Thomas stopped me.
“Video first.”
“Why?”
“Because Richard’s letter only makes sense after Caroline speaks.”
Marlene suddenly moved.
“No.”
Every face turned toward her.
She had been defiant for two days.
Manipulative.
Cold.
Strategic.
Now she looked terrified.
“Daniel, don’t play that video.”
I stared at her.
“You attacked my daughter over Caroline’s phone.”
“I was trying to stop Lily from becoming part of this.”
“You pinned her to the floor.”
“I panicked.”
“That is not an excuse.”
“I know.”
It was the first time she had admitted anything.
Evan whispered, “Marlene, stop talking.”
She rounded on him.
“You told me the files were gone.”
His face hardened.
Thomas looked at Jenna.
“Play it.”
Jenna opened the forensic copy of the memory card.
Caroline appeared on the screen.
Alive.
Sitting in this same home office.
My breath stopped.
She looked tired.
Scared.
But composed.
The date in the corner was two days before the crash.
Caroline looked directly into the camera.
“Daniel, if you’re watching this, then one of two things happened. Either Richard finally told you the truth…”
She swallowed.
“…or someone tried to use Lily to get control of the trust.”
Marlene covered her mouth.
I could not move.
Caroline continued.
“I found the Blue Heron payments. Your mother knew about them. Evan processed documents that kept them hidden.”
Evan stepped toward the laptop.
Jenna raised a hand.
“Don’t.”
He stopped.
Caroline looked down at papers outside the frame.
“But Marlene didn’t create the structure.”
My mother’s eyes filled.
David Cross went completely still.
Caroline continued.
“She was scared of the person who did.”
I turned toward Marlene.
“Who?”
She shook her head.
On the video, Caroline seemed to answer me from eleven months away.
“Richard discovered the first transfer before he died. He created Schedule C because he realized Lily’s trust was being used as leverage.”
Thomas opened the original ledger.
Pages of handwritten entries appeared.
Initials.
Codes.
Dates.
Payments.
Caroline’s voice shook for the first time.
“I thought Blue Heron was about money.”
She looked directly into the camera.
“It isn’t.”
My skin prickled.
“What is it about?” I whispered.
Caroline continued.
“The money is how they identify which family members can be controlled.”
Evan backed toward the door.
Jenna noticed.
“So did I.
“Stay where you are,” she said.
Caroline lifted a page toward the camera.
“I found the person who authorized the first transfer.”
Marlene began crying silently.
Not dramatic tears.
Not performance.
Fear.
Real fear.
“I’m sorry,” she whispered.
I looked at her.
“For what?”
She shook her head harder.
Caroline’s recorded voice continued.
“Daniel, your mother did terrible things to keep this buried.”
Marlene closed her eyes.
“But she didn’t start it.”
Thomas turned one page of the original ledger.
David stepped closer.
Evan whispered, “Turn it off.”
No one did.
Caroline took a slow breath.
“The person who gave Marlene her instructions was inside Carter Group before Richard ever made you CEO.”
I looked at David.
He stared at the screen.
Caroline continued.
“They had access to the trust, the company, Evan’s legal files, and our private family records.”
My heartbeat hammered.
That explained the forged signatures.
Claire’s token.
The administrator access.
The guardianship petition.
The attacks on my company position.
One person—or one network—had reached through every wall I thought protected us.
Caroline looked down at the ledger.
“I wrote the real name beside the first Blue Heron transfer.”
Thomas immediately flipped toward the front.
Marlene moved.
Not toward the laptop.
Toward the ledger.
I caught her wrist before she reached it.
“Don’t.”
She stared at me.
“You don’t understand.”
“Then tell me.”
“If that name comes out, Lily becomes a problem they have to solve.”
The room went silent.
I tightened my grip.
“Who are they?”
Caroline lifted the ledger page toward the camera.
The image blurred as autofocus struggled.
Thomas found the matching page in the original.
His face changed.
“Daniel…”
“What?”
Before he could turn the ledger toward me, Caroline spoke again.
“The first person you need to investigate is—”
The video froze.
A digital error message appeared.
FILE SEGMENT MISSING.
“No,” I whispered.
Jenna tried the backup copy.
Same break.
Thomas stared down at the ledger.
Then slowly closed it.
“Why did you close that?”
He looked at Marlene.
Then at David.
Then at Evan.
His face had lost all color.
“Because the name in this ledger cannot be right.”
“Whose name is it?”
A sound came from the hallway.
My office door, which I knew I had closed, moved inward by several inches.
Everyone turned.
Lily stood there.
She must have slipped away from the sitter.
Her face was pale.
Her eyes were fixed not on Marlene.
Not on Evan.
Not on Thomas.
On David Cross.
Then Lily whispered something that made every person in the room stop breathing.
