Chapter 4 - REBECCA CARTER

Rebecca was alive.
Fifty years old.
Living in Maine.
Dad called.
She hung up.
I called.
She answered.
I said one sentence.
“My name is Emma Carter.”
Silence.
Then she started crying.
We met two days later.
Rebecca looked like Dad.
Same eyes.
Same chin.
She looked at me for a long time.
Then:
“You have his smile.”
“Whose?”
She looked toward Dad.
“Richard’s.”
Relief.
Then why had Dad frightened me?
Rebecca explained.
Twenty-two years earlier, Mom became pregnant unexpectedly.
Dad and Mom were already married.
I was Dad’s daughter.
No paternity scandal.
The secret was different.
Mom didn’t want the pregnancy.
Dad did.
Grandma Eleanor discovered Mom had been making plans to leave after I was born and give Dad full custody.
Then Mom changed her mind.
Not because she wanted motherhood.
Because Grandma offered financial support.
Mom realized a Carter child meant access to Carter wealth.
Rebecca had witnessed the conversations.
“That’s why Eleanor created your trust.”
“To protect money?”
“To protect your choices.”
Grandma feared Mom would use inheritance to control me.
Exactly what happened.
Why did Rebecca disappear?
Because she confronted Mom.
Mom threatened to cut Dad off from me if Rebecca stayed involved.
Dad knew none of it.
Rebecca left.
Mom later told Dad they had fought and Rebecca wanted no contact.
Eventually she implied Rebecca died overseas.
Dad believed her.
The monthly payments?
Blackmail?
Rebecca shook her head.
“No.”
Mom had been repaying money she stole from Rebecca decades earlier.
Grandma’s estate distribution.
Rebecca discovered it years later.
Rather than expose everything, Mom agreed to monthly repayment.
“Why not tell Dad?”
Rebecca looked ashamed.
“Because I wanted my money.”
Human.
Messy.
Then Rebecca handed me an envelope.
Grandma had mailed it to her before dying.
Inside:
If Vivian ever controls Emma through this trust, give Emma the original recording.
Recording?
Rebecca removed a tiny digital recorder.
My heart pounded.
Grandma’s voice filled the room.
Then Vivian’s.
My mother.
Twenty-two years younger.
“If Emma gives me access to Eleanor’s estate someday, I’ll make sure she marries someone who understands this family.”
My stomach turned.
Grandma:
“She will marry whoever she loves.”
Mom laughed.
“Not if she wants to keep her inheritance.”
There it was.
Twenty-two years before Caleb proposed, Mom had already planned to use my inheritance to control whom I married.
My engagement hadn’t created her rage.
It had triggered a plan she had been carrying since I was a baby.
Then Rebecca told us the recording continued.

And the next voice we heard belonged to someone who had attended my graduation party.
Someone who had helped Vivian from the beginning.
