Chapter 14 - UNDER THE STATION
Construction crews opened the floor after midnight.
A stairwell led to a sealed pediatric ward.
Small beds.
Prescription bottles.
Police uniforms.
Family photographs.
North Line had housed children beneath the precinct before transfers.
Mercer knew.
He claimed he never entered.
Access logs showed his badge.
Laura sometimes used it.
Identity confusion again.
Inside the final room, we found Michael Carter.
Alive.
Unarmed.
Sitting beside a hospital bed.
Sarah lay unconscious.
The woman with us was not Sarah.
She was Claire wearing Sarah’s face.
The swap occurred during a courthouse evacuation weeks earlier.
Claire had relapsed into the role after Michael threatened her son.
Sarah had been held beneath the station.
We rescued her.
Claire surrendered fully.
Michael said he wanted arrest.
Why?
Because North Line’s automated program would activate if he entered custody.
The final system was called MOTHER NEVER CAME HOME.
It recreated abandonment scenes across cities, using children’s emergency calls to trigger custody transfers and hide assets.
Michael was not the final controller.
The program could continue without him.
Then every dispatcher screen in Detroit lit up.
A child’s voice repeated:
“My mom never came home.”
Hundreds of calls.
Different addresses.
Same sentence.
Some fake.
