Chapter 4 - THE FATHER WHO VANISHED
Thomas Collins did not disappear when I was six.
He entered federal witness protection after exposing a private trafficking network that used city contracts, foster homes, and medical records to move children under new identities.
The network was called North Line.
Mercer was its Detroit coordinator.
My mother separated Sarah and me to protect us.
I stayed under Brooks.
Sarah became Collins.
Neither child knew the other existed.
Thomas claimed Sarah contacted him after discovering Lily’s father worked for North Line.
That father was Michael Carter, a real-estate attorney who created fake eviction cases to remove mothers from apartments and transfer their children into emergency custody.
Sarah tried to leave him.
He took Leo’s medicine, drugged the children, and forced her into the sedan.
Why leave Lily and Leo in the apartment?
Because Mercer planned to stage abandonment.
Sarah would be declared negligent.
The children would enter a North Line foster home.
Michael would gain control.
The note on the counter was forced.
But Sarah changed the final letter stroke to signal coercion.
She had taught Lily what to look for.
Thomas said he wanted to rescue Sarah privately.
I told him private rescues were why we grew up apart.
He accepted the accusation.
Then Hayes traced Michael Carter to a luxury hotel near the river.
Police entered his room.
Empty.
On the bed lay Sarah’s coat.
Inside the pocket was a hospital bracelet.
