I walked toward the edge of the tent.
For once, no one laughed.
Donovan followed me before I reached the patio steps.
“Lieutenant Colonel Pierce,” he said.
I turned.
“Jocelyn is fine.”
“I’m sorry,” he said. “For tonight. For all of it.”
“You didn’t lie.”
“No,” he said. “But I almost married one.”
That was fair.
He looked back at the tent, where Fiona stood alone beneath chandeliers that suddenly made everything look cheap.
“What happens to her now?”
“That depends on who she lied to besides you.”
He nodded.
“I’ll cooperate with whatever needs to be reported.”
Then he told me why he had checked her story.
“The first time she talked about Wraith,” he said, “she described him as six-foot-four with a scar across his face.”
I said nothing.
“My mother used to work defense contracting,” he continued. “She once told me the best sniper instructor she ever met was a woman nobody could ever get a photograph of.”
