Fiona smiled like she was telling a ghost story.
“Everyone feared Wraith,” she said. “He failed people for anything. One wrong move. One bad breath. Gone.”
Wrong.
“He enjoyed breaking candidates.”
Very wrong.
“He wanted me to quit.”
Absolutely wrong.
Then she lifted her chin.
“But I refused. I crawled through that course, made my final observation, and passed.”
Arthur raised his glass.
“That’s my daughter.”
People clapped.
I chewed my steak like it owed me money.
That was the thing about lies.
Small lies need hiding.
Big lies need applause.
Malcolm took a slow sip of wine.
“Interesting,” he said. “What did Wraith look like?”
Fiona blinked.
“Excuse me?”
“The instructor. You said you beat him. What did he look like?”
Fiona recovered fast.
“Tall. Broad. Quiet. Terrifying.”
I almost smiled.
Malcolm glanced at me.
“Tall and broad?”
Fiona nodded.
“Very much so.”
I set my glass down.
