Chapter 11 - The Day David Signed Without Me

David did not deny being there.

That almost made it worse.

“I was at Owen’s office.”

“For what?”

“Granddad’s estate meeting.”

“And Sabrina?”

“She came with Mom.”

“And my forged letter?”

“I saw a letter.”

“Did you read it?”

“No.”

“Did you see my signature?”

“Yes.”

“Did you verify with me?”

“No.”

I stared at him.

“Why?”

“Owen said you wanted nothing to do with Bennett money.”

“That sounded believable to you?”

“At the time, yes.”

I remembered that year.

New baby.

No sleep.

David and I fighting constantly about Margaret showing up unannounced.

I had said repeatedly that I wanted nothing from Samuel’s estate.

For myself.

Not for Grace.

Owen had twisted a real sentiment into a false authorization.

“What did you sign?”

David went pale.

“A receipt acknowledging trustee transition.”

“To Owen?”

“Yes.”

My anger sharpened.

“So your signature helped legitimize it.”

“Yes.”

“Did you know Margaret would be added?”

“No.”

“Did you know Eleanor was being removed?”

“I thought she resigned.”

“Because of a letter supposedly from me.”

“Yes.”

“And you never asked me.”

“No.”

Every answer cut.

No dramatic excuse.

Just years of trust placed in the wrong people.

That was how schemes survive inside families.

Not because everyone is evil.

Because enough people are passive.

Eleanor called twenty minutes later.

Her voice was calm.

Professional.

Tired.

“I should have contacted you directly.”

“Yes.”

“I believed the letter.”

“Why?”

“It contained details only a family member would know.”

“Such as?”

“Your concern about Margaret controlling access to Grace.”

My stomach tightened.

“I had that concern.”

“I know.”

“Who knew?”

“David. Owen. Sabrina. Margaret.”

“Anyone else?”

“Samuel.”

Dead by then.

Eleanor continued.

“The letter stated that litigation within the Bennett family would harm Grace and asked me to step aside temporarily.”

“Why would you agree?”

“Because Owen showed me a signed family resolution.”

“Signed by whom?”

“David. Sabrina. Margaret.”

I looked at David.

He closed his eyes.

“You signed a resolution?”

“I thought it was administrative.”

I almost lost my temper.

Then forced it down.

That was what Owen expected from me.

No more free performances.

Eleanor continued.

“Within two weeks, Owen stopped returning my calls. When I requested trust statements, he told me your family had threatened litigation if I interfered.”

“We didn’t.”

“I know that now.”

“Why didn’t you investigate?”

“I did.”

That changed things.

“What did you find?”

“Transfers.”

My pulse quickened.

“What transfers?”

“Grace’s trust purchased interests in two private funds.”

“Mercer-Bennett Capital?”

“One.”

“And the other?”

“Bellweather Family Strategies.”

David frowned.

“I’ve never heard of it.”

Neither had I.

Eleanor said, “Margaret was listed as consultant.”

Of course.

“Owen?”

“Managing partner.”

“Who else?”

A pause.

“E.M.”

I straightened.

“Eleanor Mercer?”

“No.”

Her voice hardened.

“That is one reason I kept looking.”

“Then who?”

“I never identified the beneficial owner.”

E.M.

Not Eleanor.

Someone else.

The same initials on Owen’s emails.

I asked, “Did Samuel ever mention E.M.?”

“Once.”

“What did he say?”

“That if anything happened to him, I should make sure E.M. never touched the grandchildren’s money.”

My skin prickled.

“Did he give a full name?”

“No.”

“Why not?”

“He said Owen would know who he meant.”

David and I looked at each other.

Another layer.

Another person.

Eleanor continued.

“I copied everything I could before Owen cut off access.”

“Do you still have it?”

“Yes.”

“Can you send it?”

“I already did.”

An encrypted link appeared in my inbox.

“I need you to understand something,” Eleanor said.

“What?”

“Grace is not the only beneficiary.”

“I know Connor has a trust.”

“Not Connor.”

My pulse slowed.

“Who?”

“Another child.”

David went still.

“What child?”

Eleanor hesitated.

“Samuel created three protected child trusts.”

“Grace. Connor. And?”

“A child identified only by initials.”

“Which initials?”

“E.M.B.”

David’s face changed so abruptly I noticed before he spoke.

“You know.”

He shook his head.

“No.”

“You reacted.”

“Because B could mean Bennett.”

Eleanor said, “The third trust is much larger than the others.”

“How large?”

“Approximately eleven million dollars at Samuel’s death.”

Silence filled the kitchen.

I asked, “Who controls it now?”

“Owen.”

“Of course.”

Then Eleanor added:

“And according to the most recent statement I obtained, funds from Grace’s trust were transferred into that third child’s account.”

My stomach dropped.

“How much?”

“Six hundred thousand dollars.”

“Authorized by whom?”

“Owen Mercer.”

“Why?”

“Loan participation.”

“To a child?”

“Exactly.”

I opened the encrypted files.

The transfer memo was there.

Purpose:

BENEFICIARY CONSOLIDATION STRATEGY.

Recipient:

E.M.B. CHILD TRUST.

And beneath it was a handwritten approval note.

Margaret Bennett.

Sabrina Bennett.

David Bennett.

My husband stared at the screen.

“I never signed that.”

Maybe.

But his signature was there again.

Then my phone rang.

Connor.

I answered.

“Aunt Claire?”

“Yes.”

“Mom found Grandpa’s old black tablet.”

My pulse jumped.

“Where?”

“In Grandma’s car.”

“Can she bring it?”

“She’s trying.”

Then Connor whispered:

“There’s a video with E.M. in the name.”

I stood.

“Do not open it yet.”

“I already did.”

My stomach tightened.

“What’s on it?”

Connor was silent for several seconds.

Then he said:

“It’s Daddy.”

David froze beside me.

“Connor, what is Daddy doing?”

May you like

“He’s holding a baby.”
