Chapter 8 - MICHAEL’S REAL PLAN
Daniel Morris brought the original succession memo in person.
Not a miraculous document.
A copy he had kept because Michael asked every senior executive to retain signed governance drafts until the transition was complete.
The date was seven weeks before Michael died.
One week before the disputed trust amendment.
Michael’s handwriting covered the margins.
Near the successor fiduciary section, he had written:
NO FAMILY CONTROL IF I’M GONE. INDEPENDENT TRUSTEE ONLY.
Then below it:
Mom will turn grief into leverage.
I had to stop reading.
Not because the sentence accused Margaret of murder.
It did not.
Because it told me Michael knew exactly what kind of pressure she could apply after loss.
And then he died.
The official accident investigation had found no mechanical defect, no suspicious vehicle contact, and no evidence of foul play. I refused to rewrite that because family betrayal made darker stories tempting.
Margaret had enough real wrongdoing.
I did not need to invent more.
Daniel Morris explained Project Harbor.
Michael had seen early versions.
He rejected them.
“He thought the coastal assets were overleveraged and inflated,” Daniel said. “He also believed Red Fern had undisclosed family connections.”
“Did he know Stephen Vale was involved?”
“He suspected.”
“Did he tell Margaret?”
Daniel gave me a tired look.
“He told Margaret in a board meeting that if she forced related-party deals through Carter Hospitality, he would remove her as chair.”
That was motive for forging the trust later.
Again, not motive for killing him.
The distinction mattered.
Priya traced more ownership documents.
Marlowe Family Partners belonged to a Wyoming trust administered by a private bank.
She could not legally force disclosure overnight.
But a prior lawsuit involving Red Fern included an exhibit naming the trust settlor.
Margaret Carter.
There it was.
Project Harbor would have transferred Carter Hospitality money into an asset structure partly benefiting Margaret.
The board had not been told.
The largest financial question was now answered.
Why Friday?
Because Margaret needed control of Emma’s inherited voting shares to approve a transaction from which she secretly benefited.
The answer brought consequences immediately.
Samuel Price, the independent director, called an emergency board committee.
Project Harbor was suspended pending conflict review.
Margaret’s power began shrinking before any court touched the trust.
Then the source metadata arrived from Carter & Vale.
The trust amendment file was created on Stephen Vale’s computer.
Michael’s signature image had been inserted at 11:52 p.m.
The document claimed Michael signed it at 3:00 that afternoon.
Digital history showed no scanned handwritten signature was ever added.
Then a later user modified the successor fiduciary field.
Username:
MCarter-Admin.
Margaret had used that administrator profile for years.
Elena leaned back.
“That doesn’t prove she personally typed it.”
“No.”
“But it proves the file was altered from an account assigned to her office after the supposed signing.”
“Yes.”
Another wall losing bricks.
Then Detective Lewis called.
Vanessa had expanded her statement.
She said Margaret told her three weeks ago that once Friday passed, “Rachel would never control another Carter vote again.”
Vanessa also admitted something painfully personal.
She had always hated Emma sitting in Lily’s chair.
Not because it belonged to Lily.
Because Margaret spent years telling Vanessa that Lily should have been Michael’s heir if he had not married me.
That ugliness had been nurtured long before the attack.
Margaret used Vanessa’s resentment as fuel.
But Vanessa still chose the skillet.
The chapter’s final consequence came when CPS filed an emergency protective recommendation.
Emma could not return to the Carter mansion.
Neither Margaret nor Vanessa could have contact with her.
And the temporary residence listed for Emma after discharge was mine.
Not Margaret’s.
