Chapter 11 - ACCOUNT 4419

Account 4419 belonged to Austin.

Not Vanessa.

Not the trust.

Not Wentworth Capital.

Austin.

He told me before I had to ask twice.

“It’s a private contingency account.”

“How much?”

“Currently? About three-point-two million.”

My stomach tightened.

“Why do you have a secret account?”

“It isn’t secret.”

“It was secret from me.”

He flinched.

Fair.

Margaret reviewed the statements.

The account predated our marriage and received distributions from Austin’s personal investments.

Nothing illegal appeared.

Then Daniel found the problem.

Two years earlier, $600,000 left account 4419.

Destination:

Red Quay Holdings.

I stared at Austin.

“You funded Red Quay.”

“No.”

“The statement says you did.”

“I authorized six hundred thousand for a property stabilization loan Charles requested.”

“Through Red Quay.”

“I didn’t know Red Quay had been reactivated for anything else.”

“You signed it.”

“Yes.”

The word landed like a stone.

Vanessa hadn’t forged everything.

Some transactions connected to her scheme were real.

Authorized by my husband.

Not because he stole.

Because he trusted family without asking enough questions.

That distinction mattered legally.

Emotionally, it still hurt.

Austin looked at me.

“Irene, I didn’t know.”

“You keep saying that.”

“Because it’s true.”

“And every time it’s true, I find another decision you made without telling me.”

His hands opened helplessly.

I had rarely seen him without an answer.

“I thought handling family money privately protected us from family drama.”

“It protected the drama.”

That silenced him.

Daniel continued.

The six hundred thousand had been repaid eleven months later.

But the transfer gave Julian and Charles something valuable.

A legitimate example of Austin authorizing money into Red Quay.

From that point, future transfers could be disguised as part of an established pattern.

Austin’s carelessness had become infrastructure.

I hated seeing that.

I also hated that Vanessa knew exactly how to exploit him.

My phone buzzed.

A message from an unknown number.

Julian.

I’m not running from you. I’m running from her.

Below it was a photograph.

A storage locker.

Inside sat three document boxes and a red leather binder.

The same color as Vanessa’s dress beside the pool.

A second message followed.

She kept the originals.

Austin reached for my phone.

I pulled it back.

“Mine.”

He stopped immediately.

Progress.

I typed:

Where?

Julian answered with an address.

Daniel checked it.

Private storage facility outside the city.

Then another message appeared.

Don’t bring Austin.

Austin read it over my shoulder.

His jaw hardened.

I expected him to order me not to go.

Instead he said, “You’re not going alone.”

I looked at him.

“That’s different.”

“I’m learning.”

For the first time since the pool, I almost smiled.

Then Julian sent one final line.

If Vanessa learns I contacted you, she’ll use Lily next.

May you like

The smile died before it formed.

📖 Account 4419 proved Austin’s secrecy had helped create Vanessa’s cover, and Julian’s next warning shifted the danger from money directly toward our daughter. 👇
